Chapter 16 - The Responsibility He Claimed

Hale chose to testify after the other witnesses.
He described a long career, a program under pressure, and a demonstration he believed could proceed safely with backup equipment available.
He did not say he wanted his son hurt.
Nia believed him.
Intent had never been the only question.
He acknowledged writing the original removal instruction. He acknowledged authorizing the cylinder’s return without seeing a completed repair release. He disputed Reyes’s interpretation of some conversations and maintained that he expected Nia to finish a legitimate inspection.
The unsigned form was placed before him again.
“After she reported a leak, did you suspend the station?”
“Not immediately.”
“Did you produce the repair record she requested?”
“No.”
“Did you tell her that refusing to sign could end her career?”
“I told her she was done if she refused.”
“What did you intend her to understand?”
Hale shifted in his chair.
“That there would be consequences.”
The next question concerned the clipboard.
He no longer called the contact an accidental brush. The medical documentation and witnesses made that description impossible to sustain.
“I pushed it against her,” he said.
“Why?”
“She was challenging the decision.”
Nia sat very still.
He had answered the question she had carried for months.
Not because the cylinder worked. Not because he had produced evidence she refused to consider.
Because she had challenged him.
The board issued its findings after considering the testimony and documents. It substantiated the improper pressure to obtain the clearance, mishandling of restricted equipment, and Hale’s conduct toward Nia. It recommended that he not be retained.
Final action took longer.
During those months, Nia returned to her ordinary duties under different supervision. She completed the corrective instruction arising from her inadequate review of Ward’s evaluation. She did not ask for that part to disappear because Hale had done something worse.
The completed review of her emergency response remained in her record.
Eventually, the releasable notification confirmed that Hale’s separation had been approved. He would not return to the program.
Reyes received formal discipline and was removed from equipment-supervision duties. Cooperating had mattered, but it had not excused what he admitted.
Nia read the notification at her desk.
There was no rush of pleasure.
Then her supervisor asked whether she could help prepare a training bay.

A routine request. Work she was trusted to do.
She put the papers away, took her equipment checklist, and went.
