Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO LIED

I called Dana that afternoon. Asked her to come in. Alone.

She sat across from me, twisting a tissue in her hands. Nervous. Always nervous.

"Dana. I need to ask you something. About Ethan's father."

Her face went pale. The tissue tore in her hands.

"What about him?"

"How did he die?"

She looked away. Out the window. At the gray Seattle sky.

"He fell," she said. "From a ladder. At work. It was an accident."

"Was it?"

She didn't answer.

"Dana. Did you know me? Before Ethan started therapy?"

Her hands stopped moving. She looked at me. Really looked at me. For the first time.

"You don't remember," she whispered.

"Remember what?"

She stood up. Walked to the door. Then stopped.

"Eight years ago. You came to our house. You said you could help Ethan. You said you knew what was happening to him."

"I don't—"

"You promised you would come back. You promised you would fix it."

May you like

She turned to face me. Her eyes were wet.

"But you never did."
