Chapter 1 - The Fall

“PLEASE, VANESSA! HE’S JUST A BABY! GIVE HIM BACK TO ME!”
Maria Santos stood beneath the second-floor balcony, her arms reaching toward the eight-month-old boy suspended above the marble floor.
Oliver Cole was crying so hard he could barely breathe.
One tiny blue sock was slipping off his foot.
Vanessa Sterling held him against the outside of the railing, twelve feet above the foyer, with nothing beneath him but polished stone.
“Please,” Maria whispered. “Whatever I did, I'm sorry. Just give him to me.”
Vanessa looked down at her.
Her cream silk blouse was immaculate. Diamonds glittered against her neck.
“You should've kept your mouth shut, Maria.”
“I won't tell Adrian anything. I promise.”
Vanessa's expression changed.
For an instant, Maria thought the woman was finally coming to her senses.
Then Vanessa smiled.
“Promises are easy to break.”
She opened her arms.
Oliver fell.
Maria couldn't remember deciding to move.
She lunged beneath him, caught his small body against her chest, and crashed backward onto the marble.
Pain tore through her left shoulder.
Her head struck the floor.
But she curled around Oliver, protecting his skull as they slid across the foyer.
For one terrible second, he made no sound.
“Oliver?”
Maria pressed her cheek against his forehead.
“Baby, please.”
Then he screamed.
Maria began sobbing.
“That's it, sweetheart. Cry. I've got you.”
The front doors opened.
Adrian Cole stepped inside, carrying a leather briefcase.
He stopped.
His housekeeper was lying on the floor, bleeding from a cut near her temple, clutching his crying son.
“Maria?”
Before she could answer, Vanessa screamed from the balcony.
“ADRIAN! THANK GOD! MARIA DROPPED OLIVER!”
Adrian's briefcase struck the floor.
“What?”
Vanessa rushed toward the staircase.
“I tried to stop her! She was holding him over the railing!”
Maria struggled to sit upright.
“No! She threw him!”
Adrian dropped beside his son.
Oliver's tiny fingers were tangled in Maria's blouse.
“Give him to me,” Adrian said.
“Please don't move him yet. He fell from the balcony. I caught him, but he needs an ambulance.”
Adrian stared at the railing above them.
“Twelve feet?”
Maria nodded.
Vanessa reached the bottom of the stairs.
“She won't even let you hold your own child. Don't you see how obsessed she's become?”
Maria pulled Oliver closer when Vanessa approached.
“Stay away from him.”
“See?” Vanessa cried.
“Enough!” Adrian shouted.
He called 911.
Within minutes, sirens approached the mansion.
Paramedics assessed Oliver, immobilized him for transport, and arranged for Maria to receive treatment as well.
Two police officers entered the foyer.
Vanessa pointed at Maria.
“I want her arrested. She tried to kill that baby.”
Maria looked desperately around the room.
Then she saw it.
A small black security camera above the grand entrance.
“Please,” she said to the nearest officer. “Check that camera.”
Vanessa followed her gaze.
Her face lost its color.
“I need my phone,” she said.
She hurried toward the east hallway.
Adrian stepped in front of her.
“Where are you going?”
“To make a call.”
“Your phone is already in your hand.”
Vanessa stopped.
An officer separated them and instructed her to remain available for questioning.
Adrian watched as the woman he planned to marry struggled to explain why she suddenly needed to leave.
Twenty minutes later, he stood outside the pediatric trauma unit at St. Catherine's Hospital.
Oliver was undergoing emergency imaging.
Maria was being evaluated for a shoulder injury.
Vanessa had not accompanied them.
Adrian had built companies worth billions.
He had survived financial collapses, lawsuits, and negotiations that would have destroyed smaller men.
Nothing had prepared him for watching his infant son disappear behind those hospital doors.
Finally, a pediatrician approached.
“Mr. Cole?”
He stood so quickly his chair scraped the floor.
“Please tell me he's alive.”
“He's stable. His initial scans are reassuring. We haven't identified a skull fracture or internal bleeding, but we're keeping him under close observation.”
Adrian covered his face.
His knees nearly buckled.
“Thank you.”
The physician explained that Oliver would need continued neurological checks.
Adrian nodded, barely hearing anything beyond the words he's stable.
When the doctor left, Maria appeared at the end of the corridor.
Her left arm rested in a sling.
A small bandage covered her temple.
Adrian approached her.
“Maria, I need to know what happened.”
“I told you what happened.”
“Then why would Vanessa do something like that?”
Maria looked toward the pediatric unit.
“Because I was going to tell you something.”
“About her?”
Maria hesitated.
“About Claire.”
Adrian stopped.
His wife had been dead for five months.
He hadn't expected to hear her name tonight.
“What about Claire?”
Maria reached into her cardigan pocket with her uninjured hand.
She removed a small silver USB drive.
“Claire gave me this three days before she died.”
Adrian stared at it.
“What's on it?”
“A recording.”
“Of what?”
Maria's eyes filled with tears.
“Claire found out something terrible. She made me promise to keep this safe until I believed someone was changing the truth about what happened to your family.”
Adrian's stomach tightened.
“Does Vanessa know you have this?”
“Yes. I told her this morning that I couldn't keep Claire's secret anymore.”
“And that's when she took Oliver?”
Maria nodded.
Adrian looked down at the silver drive.
“Tell me exactly what Claire recorded.”
Maria's voice trembled.
“Vanessa threatening her.”
He looked up.
“What?”
“Three days before your wife died, she recorded Vanessa threatening to destroy her life if she told you the truth.”
Adrian could barely speak.
“Vanessa told me she and Claire were best friends.”
Maria looked directly into his eyes.
“Mr. Cole, Vanessa wasn't Claire's best friend.”
May you like
She swallowed.
“She was the person Claire was trying to escape.”
