Chapter 12 - ROBERT BENNETT'S OTHER SON

I laughed when Raines said it.
Not because it was funny.
Because sometimes the brain rejects information by making the wrong sound.
“My father had one son.”
“No.”
“Me.”
“Not according to Daniel.”
“Who?”
Raines looked toward the camera.
“I want protection.”
“You’re already in federal custody.”
“I want a deal.”
The prosecutor eventually agreed to discuss one.
Not because we trusted Raines.
Because the archive deadline was approaching.
Raines gave them a name.
Jonathan Vale.
Forty-one years old.
Born in New Jersey.
Mother deceased.
Father listed as unknown.
Current profession:
Corporate risk consultant.
I had never heard of him.
Rachel found him in forty minutes.
Then froze.
Jonathan Vale worked for Red Harbor Development.
The company that had sued our family trust three years earlier.
The company represented opposite Eleanor.
The company trying to gain control of property held by Bennett Holdings.
Jonathan had been fighting my mother through corporate proxies for years.
Why?
DNA gave the answer.
Federal investigators obtained discarded material under warrant.
The preliminary familial match was overwhelming.
Jonathan was my half brother.
Robert Bennett’s son.
Older than me by six years.
Born before my parents married.
My father never told me.
Apparently, Eleanor knew.
Chloe did not.
Or claimed not to.
Jonathan’s existence changed the trust.
If he could prove paternity and argue fraudulent exclusion, he could challenge beneficiary control.
But that still did not explain Daniel.
Until Vega found a photograph.
Daniel Price.
Jonathan Vale.
Michael Raines.
Together at a private airfield eight months earlier.
Jonathan was not merely another heir.
He was connected to the network.
We expected him to disappear.
He did the opposite.
He walked into the federal building voluntarily.
He asked to see me.
The first time I saw my brother, I understood immediately.
My father’s eyes.
Same shape.
Same gray-blue color.
Same way of looking at a room before speaking.
Jonathan sat across from me.
“You look like him.”
“So do you.”
He smiled faintly.
“I hate hearing that.”
“Why?”
“Because Robert Bennett ruined every life he touched.”
“Including yours?”
“Especially mine.”
Jonathan’s mother, Sarah Vale, had worked for my father before he married Eleanor.
Robert got her pregnant.
Promised support.
Then paid her to disappear.
Jonathan grew up knowing exactly who his father was.
Robert visited occasionally.
Secretly.
Paid for school.
Never gave him the Bennett name.
When Jonathan was twenty-two, he demanded recognition.
Robert refused.
Then Thomas Hart died.
Everything changed.
“My father thought you killed Thomas?”
I asked.
“No.”
“But you know who did?”
“Daniel.”
“Why work with him?”
Jonathan’s jaw tightened.
“I didn’t.”
“There are photographs.”
“Because I was investigating him.”
“Raines says otherwise.”
“Raines works for whoever is paying.”
“Why did you fight the trust?”
“Because part of it is mine.”
“At least you’re honest.”
“You would fight too.”
“Not by terrorizing my wife.”
His eyes sharpened.
“I never touched Maya.”
“What about Liam?”
“I was trying to protect him.”
I almost stood.
“Do not use my son that way.”
“I’m telling you the truth.”
“Prove it.”
He slid a photograph across the table.
Eleanor.
Alive.
Timestamped that morning.
Sitting in a cabin.
My pulse jumped.
“Where is she?”
“Safe.”
“You took her?”
“I removed her before Daniel could.”
“Where?”
“I’m not telling you.”
I stood.
Jonathan remained seated.
“If you arrest me, Daniel gets her first.”
“She’s already missing because of you.”
“No.”
He looked directly at me.
“She disappeared because she finally realized Gordon Pell betrayed her.”
“Gordon is missing.”
“Gordon isn’t missing.”
“Where is he?”
“With Daniel.”
The notary.
Chloe’s biological father.
Our family attorney.
The man who handled the trust.
Of course.
Gordon understood every clause.
Every inheritance route.
Every weakness.
“He created the documents I signed.”
“Yes.”
“He changed the trust.”
“He tried.”
“He helped Eleanor file for Liam.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Gordon owes Daniel millions.”
“For what?”
Jonathan smiled without humor.
“Blackmail.”
Everybody owed Daniel something.
Money.
Secrets.
Fear.
Jonathan continued.
“Gordon convinced Eleanor that Maya was dangerous.”
“Why would she believe him?”
“Because Eleanor already hated Maya.”
“Why?”
“Thomas.”
The old wound again.
“Eleanor believes Thomas destroyed Robert.”
“Thomas exposed him.”
“Same thing in her mind.”
“And the money?”
“Greed made the rest easy.”
I sat down.
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
My father’s warning again.
Do not trust the first person who helps you.
Jonathan had not been the first.
He was perhaps the fifth.
That did not make him safe.
“What do you want?”
“The archive opened.”
That surprised me.
“Why?”
“Because Robert erased my mother.”
His calmness disappeared.
“He bought her silence.”
“He denied me.”
“He used Gordon to hide money.”
“He let Daniel become powerful enough to destroy people.”
Jonathan leaned forward.
“I want every name public.”
“What happens if innocent people are hurt?”
“They already were.”
“Maya’s father.”
“Yes.”
“Your mother.”
“Yes.”
“My mother.”
He paused.
“Eleanor made choices.”
“So did Robert.”
“Yes.”
“So did you.”
His eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
At least he admitted it.
“Why protect Liam?”
“Because Daniel thinks controlling the child solves the succession problem.”
“And you?”
“I think children should not pay for their fathers.”
He glanced at me.
“Or grandfathers.”
For the first time, I wanted to believe him.
That made him more dangerous.
Then he gave me a piece of paper.
An address in upstate New York.
“What is this?”
“Where Eleanor is.”
“You said you wouldn’t tell me.”
“I changed my mind.”
“Why?”
“Because she asked for you.”
I looked up.
“When?”
“This morning.”
“What did she say?”
Jonathan hesitated.
“She said she knows where Thomas hid the original authentication record.”
“I thought the government had the archive.”
“It does.”
“What record?”
“The one that proves the archive is genuine.”
“Where?”
Jonathan looked toward the cameras.
“Inside Liam’s birth certificate file.”
My blood turned cold.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
He leaned closer.
“Someone altered your son’s hospital records before he was born.”
I stood.
“What?”
“Daniel knew Maya was pregnant months ago.”
“So?”
“So the plan did not begin after Liam was born.”
May you like
Jonathan’s voice dropped.
“It began before he was conceived.”
