Chapter 8 - The Woman in the Red Coat

The lawyer did not publish Nadia's location.

Detective Cross arranged to verify her identity through appropriate channels before treating the message as an account from a missing witness.

When the confirmation came, I was standing in Camille's kitchen peeling apples for a pie Leo liked.

Camille's phone rang.

She listened, covered her mouth, and sat down slowly.

"Nadia is alive," she told me.

I set the knife on the counter before my hands could fail me.

Alive.

For nine months, I had carried the image of a body in black water, a woman lost because she knew too much about a powerful man's accounts.

Leo's first picture had made the fear stronger.

Now I understood how dangerous it had been to make a picture explain more than the child himself remembered.

Nadia had reached shore after escaping the transfer and arranged temporary shelter with people she trusted outside the state.

She told investigators she'd feared Raymond's associates would find her if she used familiar addresses or contacted people who might be watched.

She had consulted independent counsel before deciding how to come forward.

Her disappearance had caused real harm to her own family and to the inquiry she hoped to support.

Survival had not made those consequences vanish.

Nadia's account was detailed.

She said Julian had offered to take her to a private meeting where they could negotiate a way to preserve records and keep her safe while she gave testimony.

Once aboard the launch, he demanded that she sign a statement withdrawing allegations about vendor payments.

When she refused, he told her she would be moved to people who could 'help her reconsider.'

At the transfer point, she saw Derek's smaller boat and another security employee waiting to receive her.

She refused to step across.

In the confusion after Derek fell into the water, she climbed onto a narrow utility walkway at the marina and ran toward a service road.

She believed somebody followed her but could not identify the person.

Those details helped investigators understand the drawing without requiring Leo to know any more than he had seen from a window.

Nadia also brought copies of the vendor records she'd intended to testify about.

Several invoices appeared to charge the shipping company for services that had never been performed.

Some payments were linked to Raymond Crowe's firms.

Julian's signature appeared on approval pages.

The records did not automatically prove every alleged fraud.

They provided concrete transactions to examine and witnesses to question.

For me, Nadia's return carried another meaning.

She had been living with the fear that speaking would hurt people who had tried to help her.

I knew something about fearing the consequences of a true statement, though I'd never faced her danger.

I sent word through her attorney that I was relieved she was safe and that she owed me no conversation.

A response arrived a few days later.

She thanked me for speaking to the police but asked that the public stop describing her disappearance in graphic detail.

I respected her request.

I no longer needed her pain to be a dramatic ending to my story.

Julian's legal problems deepened as investigators reviewed the boat transfer, the false training description, and the financial records.

His attorneys disputed parts of Nadia's account and cautioned against assuming that an allegation was an established fact.

The inquiries continued.

Meanwhile, Camille's family-law attorney requested protective arrangements for Leo supported by his documented anxiety, unexplained relocation, and his father's admitted efforts to suppress information about the dock.

The matter proceeded through the court rather than through Camille declaring herself his guardian.

Julian was ordered to comply with temporary conditions while the court considered what would best serve Leo.

He could not use private security personnel to move the boy without required notice during that period.

It was a limited decision, not a final judgment about parenthood.

That night Leo called Camille and asked a simple question.

"If I tell the truth, do I have to stop loving Daddy?"

Camille put her hand over her eyes.

May you like

"No, sweetheart," she said. "You can love someone and still need them to make safer choices."

I heard the answer from the hallway and knew it was the one Andrea would have wanted him to hear.
