Chapter 11 - THE SECRET NAOMI KEPT

Elias did not look at the drive.
He looked at Naomi.
“What is it?”
Naomi’s eyes filled.
“Something I should have told you years ago.”
Graham laughed softly.
“This is my favorite part.”
Elias ignored him.
“Naomi.”
She stepped forward.
“After Mom got sick, Novaris was under investigation for export-control violations.”
“I remember.”
“You were at the hospital almost every day.”
“I remember that too.”
“The board was afraid the investigation would destroy a financing round. Graham said there was a way to settle quietly if we produced internal communications showing the violation came from one regional office.”
Elias’s face hardened.
“It didn’t.”
“No.”
“What did you do?”
Naomi’s voice broke.
“I signed an affidavit I knew was incomplete.”
Maya felt the air leave the corridor.
Elias stared at his daughter.
“Why?”
“Because Mom was dying, you were falling apart, twenty thousand employees were terrified, and Graham told me the truth would collapse the company.”
“You lied to regulators.”
“Yes.”
Graham lifted the encrypted drive.
“Copies of every draft, every message, every discussion.”
Naomi wiped tears from her face.
“He’s used it for years.”
Elias closed his eyes.
Graham spoke gently.
“Now you understand. Everyone has leverage.”
Blackbird.
Not a database.
A philosophy.
Elias opened his eyes.
“No.”
Graham frowned.
“No?”
“You misunderstand leverage.”
Elias turned to Naomi.
“Did you lie?”
“Yes.”
“Was it illegal?”
“I think so.”
“Then you tell the truth.”
Naomi stared at him.
“Dad—”
“You tell the truth, and you accept what comes.”
Graham’s smile faded.
Elias looked at him.
“That is what you never understood. Shame only controls people who are still hiding.”
Naomi inhaled shakily.
Then she took out her phone.
“Serena?”
Serena stepped forward.
“I want to make a voluntary disclosure.”
Graham’s face changed.
“You stupid—”
Naomi looked at him.
“No. I was stupid when I let you convince me fear was leadership.”
Maya saw the countdown.
00:09:14.
“Key,” she said.
Everyone turned.
Graham tightened his hand around the walnut box.
One of his security officers shifted uneasily.
Elias noticed.
“What’s your name?” he asked the officer.
The man hesitated. “Luis Ortega.”
“How long here?”
“Fourteen years.”
“Kids?”
Graham snapped, “Do not answer him.”
Luis looked at Graham.
Then Elias.
“Two.”
Elias nodded.
“If Helix launches and people get hurt because we knew the system was unsafe, what do you tell them?”
Luis swallowed.
Graham stepped back.
“Think carefully.”
Luis lowered his hands.
The second officer did the same.
Graham stared at them.
“You work for me.”
Luis shook his head.
“No, sir. I work here.”
Graham turned and ran.
James moved first.
For a man with a bandaged head, he was fast.
He blocked the corridor.
Graham swung the walnut box.
It struck James in the shoulder.
Maya lunged for the box as it fell.
Graham grabbed her jacket.
Elias shouted.
Luis pulled Graham away.
The second officer pinned him against the wall.
Maya hit the floor with the box in both hands.
The key skittered out.
00:05:46.
She grabbed it.
“Andrew!”
He ran to the terminal.
Elias’s founder key was still in place.
Andrew inserted the engineering key.
Both men turned simultaneously.
AUTHORIZED.
Maya slammed DEPLOYMENT FREEZE.
The terminal processed.
00:04:58.
00:04:57.
Then:
EXTERNAL DEPLOYMENTS SUSPENDED.
IMMUTABLE BACKUP LOCKED.
The corridor erupted in relieved noise.
Maya sank against the wall.
James sat beside her.
“You okay?”
She laughed once.
“No.”
“Me neither.”
Elias looked at Graham, held by his own security officers.
The CEO’s face had emptied.
For years he had built systems that turned fear into obedience.
Now no one in the basement was afraid of him.
Serena’s phone rang.
She listened, then looked at Elias.
“State investigators are here.”
Graham closed his eyes.
Elias turned to Naomi.
She was crying silently.
He put a hand on her shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“So am I.”
“Do you forgive me?”
Elias looked at the officers leading Graham away.
“Forgiveness is not the first thing we do.”
Naomi looked at him.
“What is?”
“We tell the truth.”
He glanced at Maya and James.
May you like
“All of it.”
