Chapter 17 - Consequences Without a Parade

The ceremony did not repair everything by nightfall. A video of Voss's admission spread online, and the comments divided into the usual camps. Some called his apology courageous; some demanded punishment; others said no one should have forced the past into the open.

Leah stopped reading.

Courage Road's board formally removed Voss as its public spokesperson and placed its marketing contract under outside review. The charity corrected its historical materials and published a grant-status page so applicants could see when payments would resume. The state charity regulator acknowledged receiving documentation and said any review would follow its normal process. No one promised an instant criminal case.

Voss's chain of command also continued a separate inquiry into his conduct at the memorial. Leah provided her account and the full recording when requested, then left those officials to make their own findings. She didn't ask to be told details they couldn't share.

Isaiah obtained a repaired vehicle lift through a local accessibility program while Courage Road's emergency fund restarted. He sent Leah a photograph of himself driving to a ballgame. Underneath he'd written: I chose the route.

Ben agreed to tell the crossing story to a military oral-history project, but he insisted that the interviewer speak with all surviving participants who wished to be involved. Isaiah chose not to record his portion yet. For the first time, nobody tried to persuade him otherwise.

One evening Teresa visited the Hales' house. Leah showed her the envelope holding the small amount of ash and rain-darkened grit the honor-guard soldiers had helped gather from the sidewalk. She and June had already taken advice from the funeral home about handling it safely. They would keep it with their father's other remains, without pretending it could be made pure again.

“I kept expecting to feel better when Voss apologized,” Leah told Teresa.

“Did you?”

“Not the way I imagined. I mostly felt sad that Dad spent so long waiting.”

Teresa nodded. “That sounds about right.”

When she left, Leah found June in the living room reading Daniel's unfinished crossword. They worked through the clues together. June knew the names of his favorite singers; Leah knew obscure military history. Between them, they finished nearly the whole page.

One answer remained blank. The clue was A person who comes back for someone else, six letters.

“Rescue?” June offered.

“That's the action,” Leah said, smiling faintly. “Maybe he left the person undefined on purpose.”

May you like

She slid the pencil across the table. June wrote nothing. They decided the blank could stay.
