Chapter 14 - The Morning He Corrected Himself

Crane asked to address the same officers who had watched him point at Maya across the conference table. The commander agreed only after reviewing what Crane intended to say. This was not a hearing and it would not replace the investigation.

“I used my rank to shut down a question I should have listened to,” Crane began. “The manner of my conduct was wrong.”

He looked at Maya, seated again beside the water bottle. She gave no encouraging nod. He did not deserve an easy performance of absolution.

“The Homefront Passage brochure attributed the 2011 vehicle extraction to me,” he continued. “I coordinated communications and assisted the response. Sergeant Elias Dalton, Specialist Owen Briggs, and other personnel performed critical extraction work. I knew the brochure's wording was misleading. I failed to correct it.”

A man at the back asked whether this meant Crane had lied about a military award. Crane answered precisely: he had not received a decoration for carrying the men from the vehicle, and the disputed marketing claim should not be confused with his official service record. He had still allowed false credit to attach to his name.

Major Shah documented the statement. The Army would review any personnel consequences through proper channels. Nobody clapped.

Afterward Crane approached Maya. “I want to apologize for how I treated you.”

“I accept that you said it,” she replied. “I still owe Lucas Parker an apology he doesn't have to take.”

“I've written him too.”

“Then let him decide.”

On her way out, Maya saw Noah watching from the hall. He had refused to attend the address because he did not want his father's name used to rehabilitate Crane's reputation. He asked one question.

“Did he say Dad's name clearly?”

May you like

“Yes,” she said. “He did.”

Noah closed his eyes. Maya stayed beside him without touching his shoulder or offering a speech. This time silence was something she could give.
