Chapter 9 - Seven Seconds

Marcus had every door open before we reached the house.

Police occupied the front hall.

Ruth sat in the dining room.

Colin beside her.

Lauren alone near the window.

Three phones bagged.

Two laptops seized.

Still, the relay showed remote activity.

Someone outside.

Or a scheduled process.

Jonah went straight to the service kitchen.

No one touched the ice machine.

Good.

He opened the lower panel.

Green light blinking.

Remote admin session:

CMC-ROOT.

Colin.

I looked toward the dining room.

Colin sat in full view.

“How?”

Jonah checked.

“Automation token.”

Preloaded.

He did not need a device now.

He had scheduled the relay to wipe itself if COLD TABLE failed.

Of course.

A contingency.

Timer:

00:03:41.

Three minutes.

Emily stood beside Jonah.

“What do you need?”

“Clean storage.”

Marcus handed him an unused encrypted drive from police tech.

Jonah shook his head.

“Can’t copy during normal operation.”

“Why?”

“Root rejects external mount while sync is live.”

I stared.

“The seven seconds.”

“Yes.”

Every sync paused local enforcement.

Not just locks.

Permissions.

For seven seconds, the relay became stupid.

A maintenance gap.

The thing they used to trap Emily.

Now our only opening.

Timer:

00:02:58.

Torres arrived from Mercer House.

She showed warrant authorization on her phone.

“Preserve and copy.”

Good.

No gray area.

Jonah connected the drive.

Rejected.

We waited.

Ice machine compressor vibrated.

Timer:

00:02:31.

I looked into dining room.

Mother watched.

She knew.

Colin watched too.

Lauren looked confused.

Maybe she had never understood the technical layer.

I walked in.

“Who scheduled the wipe?”

Colin smiled.

“Wipe?”

Mother said nothing.

I asked her.

“Do you know what’s behind the ice machine?”

She looked at Emily.

“She became obsessed with that noise.”

Emily entered.

Mother continued:

“She would stand in the kitchen counting.”

“Because it was the only time your locks stopped controlling me.”

Mother’s eyes shifted.

Tiny.

That hurt her.

Not morally.

Strategically.

Emily said:

“You thought fear made me confused.”

Mother replied:

“Fear did make you confused.”

Emily smiled.

“Not enough.”

Timer:

00:01:48.

Jonah called:

“Ready.”

We moved back.

He mounted drive.

Waited.

The ice machine clicked.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Everything stopped.

Seven seconds.

“Now.”

Jonah hit enter.

Drive mounted.

Copy started.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Progress:

32%.

Five.

58%.

Six.

81%.

Seven.

Power returned.

Copy froze.

Jonah swore.

“Not enough.”

Timer:

00:01:05.

Next sync normally seventeen minutes away.

Too late.

Emily looked at the relay.

“Can we force it?”

Jonah shook his head.

“Admin can.”

I looked at Colin.

He smiled.

No.

Then Lauren spoke from the doorway.

“Use service test.”

Everyone turned.

Colin’s face changed.

Mother looked at Lauren.

“What?”

Lauren swallowed.

“When we changed door locks, Colin ran service test from the keypad.”

Jonah moved.

“What code?”

“I don’t know.”

Colin said:

“She’s making it up.”

Lauren flinched.

Then anger replaced fear.

“You made me answer her calls.”

Colin stared.

Mother said:

“Lauren.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You said we were protecting Adrian.”

Mother stood.

“Stop talking.”

Lauren’s eyes filled.

“You told me Sophie was trying to take the company.”

Emily said nothing.

Lauren continued:

“You told me Jonah was sleeping with her.”

Mother snapped:

“Enough.”

Lauren looked at me.

“I never knew about a fire.”

Maybe true.

Maybe not.

Later.

Timer:

00:00:41.

“Code,” Jonah said.

Lauren closed her eyes.

“He used Dad’s birthday.”

My father.

March 7.

0307.

Jonah entered service menu.

SERVICE TEST.

Code:

0307.

Accepted.

Timer:

00:00:29.

Jonah pressed test.

Ice machine clicked.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Silence.

Seven seconds.

Copy resumed.

81.

87.

92.

96.

99.

Power returned.

100%.

Jonah pulled drive.

At the same moment, relay screen went black.

Self-wipe executed.

Too late.

We had the mirror.

Colin stood.

Police stopped him.

Mother sat down.

For the first time, she looked old.

Jonah mounted the copied log on a clean laptop.

Audit hashes.

Fifteen years.

Every altered approval.

Every diverted call.

Every lock event.

Every GHST node.

Every account recovery.

RMC-01.

CMC-ROOT.

D.MERCER.

L.MERCER.

Lauren’s user.

She started crying.

“I only changed messages.”

Emily looked at her.

“That was enough.”

No comfort.

No cruelty.

Truth.

Then Jonah opened the transfer trail from the eighteen-million escrow.

Court monitor log.

Colin initiated.

Daniel approved.

Ruth recovery credential released.

Three signatures.

Not mine.

Not Emily’s.

Then the physical ledger from Mercer House arrived in a police evidence scan.

TABLES.

Table numbers mapped to ghost entities.

Table 1:

First fire.

Table 14:

Commissary.

Table 22:

Mercer Relief.

Table 31:

Sophie containment.

My stomach turned.

“Containment?”

Emily leaned closer.

Entries.

Phone diversion.

Private investigator on her.

Medication rumor campaign.

House staff incentives.

Party labor.

They had budgeted her isolation.

A line item.

Mother said from behind us:

“She was destabilizing the family.”

I turned.

“No.”

She held my gaze.

“She was getting close.”

There.

Not unstable.

Accurate.

Then Jonah clicked the oldest audit entry.

FIRST FIRE - AUTHORITY CHAIN.

RMC-01.

Mother.

CMC prototype.

Colin.

Contractor.

Insurance amendment.

My cloned signature.

The first lie.

The origin.

Then he found a note.

M.R. PRESENT - UNEXPECTED.

Mateo Ruiz present.

Unexpected.

Mother knew he was inside before the incident completed.

Jonah stared.

His face emptied.

“You knew.”

Mother said nothing.

He stepped toward her.

Torres moved closer.

Jonah stopped himself.

Good.

Then the relay backup displayed its final event before self-wipe.

REMOTE MASTER DRIVE ACCESS.

Location:

Mercer House basement.

User:

D.MERCER.

Daniel.

He was not merely standing by the server.

He had the master drive.

At that moment, Torres’s phone rang.

Officer at Mercer House.

Daniel had slipped his escort during a smoke medical check.

Gone.

Jonah looked at the audit.

Then at the evidence chain.

Master drive still connected remotely.

One last sync request incoming.

If Daniel got seven seconds, he could still corrupt the physical-to-digital mapping before the court copy finalized.

Timer:

00:00:09.

We stared.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Silence.

Seven seconds opened.

May you like

And Daniel reached for the master drive.

CUT.
