Chapter 3 - A Photograph Out of Time

Sofia studied the photograph until the faces blurred. Mateo wore the same denim jacket he had been wearing in the last picture she took of him, but his hair was longer, and a thin scar crossed one eyebrow. The calendar behind him showed a month that placed the picture two years after his supposed disappearance. If the date was genuine, he had been alive long after the family stopped receiving messages.

Chen asked whether Sofia could identify the location. The building had been demolished, but old real estate advertisements showed its windows and the distinctive red brick along the side entrance. The photograph matched the freight office well enough to investigate further. Analysts would need to assess the print and any digital source to determine when it was created. Sofia couldn't simply treat the calendar as proof of the date.

She went through Mateo's belongings at their mother's apartment. He had kept tools organized in cloth rolls, spare batteries labeled with purchase dates, and an old notebook of hotel room wiring diagrams. Sofia found a page headed with a list of names that overlapped with the note. Beside one name Mateo had written, "ask about the shift nobody clocked." Another entry mentioned employee housing paid through a contractor's account.

Sofia remembered Mateo complaining about night workers who appeared on building access records without matching payroll entries. He'd said the hotel company was using security systems to keep track of people who weren't employees on paper. Sofia had thought he was exaggerating. Now she wondered whether he had discovered falsified staffing or exploited workers who couldn't safely complain.

Her mother watched her sort the notebooks. "He wouldn't leave without telling us," Elena said.

"He might if he thought telling us would put us in danger."

"Don't turn that into a kind reason to forgive him for staying away. We don't know why he did."

Sofia looked up. Her mother had waited through three years of speculation. She understood the danger of building a gentle explanation before they had facts.

At a meeting with Chen, Sofia learned that one contractor on the list, Westgate Staffing, had been investigated for wage irregularities. Several workers claimed their identification documents were held as a condition of employment. The allegations were being examined through separate labor processes. Mateo's security work could have given him access to building entry logs that contradicted the company's payroll records.

Marco agreed to a formal interview with counsel. He said he met Mateo after being asked to examine hotel acquisition records. Mateo told him that rooms billed as vacant were regularly occupied by off-the-books workers. Marco claimed he tried to persuade Mateo to leave the matter to attorneys, but Mateo wanted to protect a woman who was about to testify in an employment dispute.

"Who was she?" Chen asked.

Marco said her name was Isabel Vega, but he didn't know where she was now. Sofia recognized the name from a handwritten note in Mateo's notebook. She had assumed it belonged to a girlfriend. The possibility that Mateo had been helping somebody else made Sofia proud and frightened at once.

That night Sofia's hotel manager called. A guest had complained that Sofia stole private paperwork. The hotel was terminating her employment unless the investigation cleared her conduct. Sofia asked for copies of the policies and the opportunity to respond. She did not pretend discovering the note gave her unlimited rights to a guest's documents. But she also refused to describe herself as a thief when she had turned the paper over to police.

She spent the following morning applying for work at a smaller hotel. The application asked whether she'd ever been dismissed for misconduct. Sofia left the question unanswered until she could consult an employment adviser about how to describe the pending review accurately.

Before noon, Chen called. Investigators had located Isabel Vega. She was living in another state under her real name. She agreed to talk, but only if Sofia promised not to bring her mother or contact her without warning.

Isabel said Mateo had helped her leave the city. Then she added, "He didn't disappear because of Marco. He disappeared because I asked him to carry something out of that building."
