Chapter 7 - A Door That Opened Both Ways

Lila called the apartment building manager herself. She documented the package, asked for security footage to be preserved, and moved temporarily to a confidential location through her advocate. Dana offered a room in her apartment; Lila said she was grateful but preferred not to give the person leaving photographs another family address to watch.

Detective Bell traced the car Dana had photographed to a private investigations firm. The company confirmed it had been hired by a representative of the Bellini family to document meetings connected to a civil dispute. The arrangement itself was not proof of a crime. Recording a person outside a police station could nonetheless matter when placed next to the package and Lila's history. The investigators requested records through legal channels.

At the office, Dana's business partner Ben brought a stack of cancellation emails. Three clients had suspended contracts because of the public fight at Marco's wedding. A fourth wanted to know whether Dana might bring a detective to the rehearsal dinner. Ben spoke softly. "We have payroll Friday. We can pay people, but we can't cover next month's rent if this keeps happening."

"I'll tell clients I won't discuss the case."

"You already talked to a reporter."

Dana remembered the reporter waiting outside the courthouse. She had answered one question about a missing sister, then another about the wedding, then a third about the certificate. None of her statements had been false. That didn't mean she had respected Lila's privacy.

She called Lila to apologize again. This time she didn't ask to be forgiven. Lila told her a media outlet had found the first name of the person who had helped her escape. Nora's daughter had been confronted outside school. Dana hung up sick with the realization that every public sentence might lead strangers toward somebody who had tried to help.

She issued a short written statement asking for privacy and declined additional interviews. Then she and Ben told their staff that the company would accept whatever business consequences followed. There was no heroic speech. People needed checks on Friday. Ben suggested temporary contract work to cover expenses, and Dana spent the afternoon helping an unfamiliar caterer load equipment instead of negotiating luxury reception packages.

The guardianship court held a further review. An independent evaluation concluded that Lila could express stable choices, understood her circumstances, and wished to control her own affairs. The judge modified the interim arrangements and scheduled a final hearing after the relevant records could be assessed. Salazar told Dana that the speed was unusual but not magical: independent counsel, medical evidence, and Lila's direct testimony mattered more than any dramatic accusation.

Afterward, Lila met Dana on courthouse steps. "I told them I want my marriage challenged," she said. "Not because you want it. Because I do."

"I'll come if you want me there."

"I do. But please don't speak for me."

Dana nodded. It was a harder promise than she expected.

That evening Nora called from a pay phone. She had remembered something she hadn't told investigators. At Hawthorn, a woman named Dr. Avery had once refused to sign an authorization for an increased sedative dose. Nora had seen Eleanor come to the house the following day with a replacement sheet bearing a signature that looked like Avery's. Nora had kept one carbon copy because management told her to burn it, and the instruction frightened her.

"I didn't save the whole chart," Nora said. "Just one page."

Dana told her not to bring it to the apartment. She gave Bell's direct number and asked Nora to let him handle it.

An hour later Bell called back. Nora had delivered the document. A preliminary comparison showed the signature might not be authentic, but it required verification. More importantly, the date aligned with Lila's description of a period when she was heavily sedated and couldn't remember a court hearing that supposedly took place by video.

"Does that prove Marco arranged it?" Dana asked.

"Not yet."

"Then what's different now?"

Bell took a breath. "Dr. Avery has agreed to be interviewed. She says she resigned because the owners ordered her to certify a patient she'd never examined. She also says somebody threatened to report her professional license if she refused."

Dana was relieved until Bell added, "And the owner she names isn't Marco. It's your mother's former financial adviser."
