Chapter 12 - The Blue Ledger

I hit the floor with Lily under me.

Concrete dust burst beside my elbow.

Police shouted from the stairwell.

When I looked up, Sloan’s gun was on the ground and Graham was holding his own weapon.

Ethan stood between him and us.

“You’re finished,” Ethan said.

“I’ve been ‘finished’ three times in twenty years.”

Graham backed toward the open construction edge.

Sloan clutched his shoulder where the bullet had grazed him.

“Elaine gave you Julia’s schedule,” he said.

Graham’s eyes flicked toward him.

That was enough.

Ethan heard it too.

“You killed Julia.”

“I never touched her.”

“You arranged it.”

“Julia was going to destroy all of us.”

Ethan took one step forward.

“She was my wife.”

“She was reckless.”

Lily made a small sound under my arm.

Graham looked down at her.

“She should never have had that key.”

I stood slowly, keeping Lily behind me.

“Then why take her? You already knew about the vault.”

“Because Julia was sentimental. She never trusted one copy.”

He looked at Lily’s backpack.

“There was always another piece.”

Lily’s fingers tightened around my sleeve.

“No,” I said.

“Ask her.”

Graham smiled at her. “Your mother taught you where to hide things, didn’t she?”

Lily’s chin trembled.

Then she reached into the lining of her backpack and peeled off a purple butterfly sticker.

A microSD card was taped underneath.

Graham’s expression changed.

Police rushed onto the floor.

He raised the gun.

Sloan kicked his knee from the side.

The weapon skidded across the concrete.

Officers pinned Graham down.

Ethan dropped to Lily and pulled her against him.

I could barely hear over the shouting.

Detective Ruiz took the microSD card in an evidence sleeve.

“What’s on it?” I asked Lily.

“Mommy talking.”

Back at the secure command room, they opened the recording.

Julia appeared beside a car, speaking quickly.

She described Graham’s laundering structure, Daniel’s frame-up, and Richard’s cover-up.

Then another voice entered the recording.

Richard.

“I know Daniel was innocent,” he said. “But if this gets out, Whitmore collapses.”

My mother covered her mouth.

Ethan did not move.

Julia replied, “Then let it collapse.”

The recording ended.

Police had enough for warrants across three states.

Graham was in custody.

Sloan agreed to testify about his father’s role.

Richard asked for an attorney.

I should have felt finished.

Then Detective Ruiz turned another page of the Blue Ledger.

“Clara.”

She pointed to a line near the bottom.

BENNETT — FINAL.

Under it, in different ink, was a notation none of us had noticed.
