Chapter 2 - THE ORDER

Grant Mercer moved first.
"That is completely false."
Catherine backed into the galley cart. "You sent it."
"I sent nothing."
David stepped between them. "Show me the order."
Catherine dropped her eyes to the tablet and swiped hard enough to miss the first menu.
Then she swiped again.
Her thumb stopped.
"It was here."
"Show me."
"I'm trying."
The message queue was empty.
Archived notices were empty.
Deleted items were empty.
Mercer spread his hands. "There. She misread a seat update."
Catherine looked at him. "It said, 'Passenger 2A must be reseated before pushback. Do not discuss operational reason with passenger.'"
A phone rose in 1C.
Another rose behind it.
Mercer saw the cameras and lowered his voice. "You need to stop making accusations."
David held Malik's paper boarding pass toward the airport manager. "Pull the reservation."
The manager scanned it.
His handheld showed MALIK JOHNSON - 22C.
Malik leaned forward. "That's not my seat."
The manager scanned the paper again.
The barcode returned 2A.
Two seats.
One passenger.
David's phone vibrated.
He ignored it. "When was 22C assigned?"
The manager opened the history.
8:41 A.M. - 2A REMOVED.
8:52 A.M. - BOARDING PASS PRINTED: 2A.
David pointed. "If he was moved at 8:41, why did the gate print 2A eleven minutes later?"
No one answered.
Malik rubbed his thumb over a tiny code beneath the barcode.
JX-417.
"Dad, what's that?"
David's eyes locked on it.
Johnson Aerotech used JX prefixes for restricted internal test programs. They were never supposed to appear on passenger documents.
His phone vibrated again.
This time he checked it.
Three messages from his chief of staff filled the screen.
MESA - now MERIDIAN - EXECUTIVE OFFICE ASKED IF YOU WERE AT THE AIRPORT.
THEY CALLED BEFORE YOU CALLED ME.
CALL MARTIN.
David tapped the last line and hit Martin Hale's name.
Martin answered before the first ring finished.
"David? I just heard something happened with Malik."
David went still. "Who told you?"
A beat.
"Your chief of staff. What's going on?"
David looked at the message timestamp.
His chief of staff had texted forty seconds ago.
"Where are you?"
"Parking garage. I was coming to meet you for breakfast, remember?"
David had forgotten.
Malik heard the voice and finally exhaled.
"Uncle Martin?"
Martin's tone changed instantly. "Hey, champ. You okay?"
Malik nodded before remembering Martin could not see him. "Yeah."
"Stay with your dad. I'm coming in."
The line ended.
David looked back at the airport manager. "Source login. Now."
The manager tapped through two security screens.
A red box flashed.
ACCESS HISTORY PURGED.
Catherine whispered, "That doesn't happen by itself."
The manager opened the backup audit.
One line remained.
SOURCE: MERIDIAN CORPORATE OPERATIONS - EXECUTIVE ACCESS.
TIME: 08:41:17.
A second field loaded.
AUTHENTICATION PATH: EXTERNAL PARTNER KEY.
David's mouth tightened.
Mercer reached for the handheld.
The manager pulled it away.
"Whose partner key?" David asked.
The field spun.
Footsteps hit the jet bridge.
Martin Hale entered in a dark blue coat, moving fast.
He crossed straight to Malik and gripped the boy's shoulder.
"You did exactly right calling your dad."
Malik's face loosened for the first time since Catherine touched his backpack.
David almost felt it too.
Then the handheld chimed.
The manager stared at the screen.
Martin turned.
"What?"
The manager swallowed.
"The seat change was authenticated with a Johnson Aerotech executive credential."
David looked at Martin.
Martin looked back.

And neither man spoke.
