Chapter 6 - THE LAST THING PRESTON HID

The safe deposit box was opened under legal supervision.

Inside were no diamonds.

No stacks of cash.

Nothing cinematic.

Just documents.

And documents were far more dangerous to Preston than jewels ever could have been.

There were contracts.

Transfer records.

Copies of signatures.

Property files.

Loan applications.

And a handwritten ledger documenting nearly seven years of money routed through family companies.

Caroline spent three hours going through it.

Then she called me.

“Claire.”

I knew that voice.

“What?”

“There’s enough here to resolve almost everything.”

“Everything?”

“The hidden marital assets. The shell companies. The transfers to Nolan. Audrey’s expenses. The attempted Riverside financing.”

I sat down.

“How much?”

“More than we thought.”

I closed my eyes.

Not because I cared about the money.

Because I remembered every time Preston had told me I spent too much on groceries.

Every time Cynthia criticized a purchase.

Every time I had wondered whether I was irresponsible.

Meanwhile...

They had been moving hundreds of thousands of dollars behind my back.

“What happens now?”

“That depends partly on prosecutors.”

“And the money?”

“We’ll pursue what legally belongs to you.”

I stared through the glass doors toward the garden.

Women were sitting outside eating lunch.

One laughed at something another woman had said.

A year ago, none of them knew each other.

Now they were helping one another find apartments.

Jobs.

Attorneys.

Bank accounts.

Fresh starts.

“Caroline?”

“Yes?”

“When this is over…”

I paused.

“I want my share put into the fund.”

She went quiet.

“All of it?”

“What am I going to do with it?”

“Buy a yacht?”

“I get seasick.”

She laughed.

Then her voice softened.

“Claire, you don’t owe anyone that money.”

“I know.”

That was exactly why I wanted to do it.

Six months later, the legal process finally ended.

Preston entered a settlement related to the financial misconduct.

He lost his partnership permanently.

Several of the disputed assets were liquidated.

Nolan repaid money traced through his consulting company.

Audrey reached her own agreement regarding funds paid on her behalf.

Cynthia cooperated fully.

For the first time in decades...

The Vale family stopped protecting appearances.

And started facing consequences.

My portion of the recovered assets was larger than I expected.

When Caroline showed me the number, I stared at it for nearly a minute.

Then I signed the transfer.

The Bennett House Legal Fund suddenly had enough money to operate for years.

Enough to hire two full-time attorneys.

Enough to establish emergency housing.

Enough to help women who had been told:

You have nowhere to go.

You own nothing.

You can’t afford to leave.

Nobody will believe you.

The money Preston had tried to use to trap me...

Was now helping other women escape.

That felt better than revenge ever had.

But one question remained.

What happened to Preston?

For almost a year...

I didn’t know.

Until one afternoon, a letter arrived.

May you like

Not from Cynthia.

From him.
