Chapter 1 - FORTY-SEVEN SECONDS

Mr. Ortiz kept recording for exactly forty-seven seconds.

That was all it took.

Through the narrow glass panel in the classroom door, he watched Ms. Kendrick stand over Maisie while the little girl shook so hard the scissors rattled in her hand.

A thick section of Maisie’s hair lay on the floor beside her sneaker.

“Stop crying,” Ms. Kendrick said. “You made a choice. Now finish fixing it.”

Maisie’s lower lip trembled.

“I don’t want to.”

“You should have thought of that before you ignored me.”

Mr. Ortiz felt every muscle in his body tighten.

He had cleaned Jefferson Elementary for eleven years. He had broken up fights, helped children who got sick in the hallway, and once carried a first grader outside when a toaster fire filled the cafeteria with smoke.

He knew the difference between a child being corrected and a child being frightened.

Maisie was terrified.

Ms. Kendrick reached for the scissors.

That was when Mr. Ortiz stopped recording.

He opened the door.

“Put them down.”

Ms. Kendrick spun around.

Her face changed the instant she saw him.

“Excuse me?”

Mr. Ortiz walked straight to Maisie and crouched beside her.

“You’re okay, sweetheart. Give me the scissors.”

Maisie placed them into his palm.

Ms. Kendrick stepped forward.

“This does not concern you.”

“A crying child with scissors concerns me.”

“She cut her own hair.”

Maisie looked up so quickly that Mr. Ortiz saw the truth before she spoke.

“No, I didn’t.”

Ms. Kendrick’s voice sharpened.

“Maisie.”

The girl flinched.

Mr. Ortiz stood between them.

“Don’t use that tone with her.”

The teacher stared at him.

Then she noticed his phone.

“What were you doing out there?”

Mr. Ortiz said nothing.

Her eyes narrowed.

“You were recording me.”

“I was documenting what I saw.”

“You had no right.”

“Maybe.”

He opened the classroom door wider.

“But I have it.”

The hallway suddenly felt very quiet.

Ms. Kendrick pointed at his phone.

“Delete it.”

“No.”

“I’m ordering you to delete it.”

“You don’t give me orders about my personal phone.”

Her face flushed.

Before she could answer, Principal Halpern appeared at the far end of the hallway.

“What’s going on?”

Ms. Kendrick moved first.

“Thank God. Maisie had an emotional episode. She grabbed scissors and started cutting her own hair. Mr. Ortiz barged in and began threatening me.”

Maisie gasped.

Mr. Ortiz looked at the principal.

“She’s lying.”

Ms. Kendrick laughed once.

“A custodian is accusing a teacher of lying?”

Mr. Ortiz unlocked his phone.

“No.”

He held it up.

“The video is.”

Principal Halpern’s expression changed.

He watched the forty-seven seconds without speaking.

When it ended, Maisie whispered something from behind Mr. Ortiz.

“She did it to Sophie too.”

Principal Halpern froze.

Mr. Ortiz turned.

“Who’s Sophie?”

Maisie wiped her face with her sleeve.

May you like

“The girl who stopped coming to school.”
