Chapter 15 - The Man in the Family Photos

Ray Bennett was Mark’s father’s younger brother.

He had disappeared from the family after a bitter fight over money.

I had met him twice.

Tall.

Bald.

Scar behind his ear from a motorcycle accident.

Mercer.

The mysterious security consultant was not Mercer at all.

It was Raymond Bennett using an alias.

Mark’s uncle.

My husband sat with his hands locked together.

“I thought he moved to Florida.”

“When did you last see him?”

“Before we got married.”

I stared at him.

“And you didn’t recognize the description?”

“I hadn’t seen him in sixteen years.”

Detective Owens confirmed the fingerprints from the abandoned SUV within hours.

Raymond Bennett.

Multiple aliases.

Private security work in three states.

And direct payments from Victor Dane.

The case had just entered our family.

Again.

Mark looked sick.

“My father hated Ray.”

“Why?” I asked.

“He said Ray would do anything for money.”

The answer felt too simple.

By morning, investigators found another connection.

Michael Bennett—Mark’s father—had once worked maintenance for Merritt Property Services.

Twenty years earlier.

He had also filed an internal complaint about phantom vendors.

Victor Dane had been a junior partner then.

The scheme was older than Chloe.

Older than Mark’s career.

Maybe older than our marriage.

Owens spread the records across the table.

“Michael tried to report financial fraud in 2007. Two weeks later, he withdrew the complaint.”

“Why?” Mark asked.

“No record.”

I looked at him.

“Ask your mother.”

Mark’s mother, Evelyn, lived in Ohio.

He called her on speaker.

At first she denied knowing anything.

Then Mark said Ray’s name.

She went silent.

“Mom?”

Her voice became very small.

“Your father didn’t withdraw that complaint because he changed his mind.”

Mark closed his eyes.

“Why did he?”

“Ray threatened you.”

Mark stared at the phone.

“What?”

“You were seventeen. Ray told your father he knew where you worked after school.”

A terrible circle closed in front of me.

Mark had become his father.

Threatened through his child.

Silenced through fear.

Evelyn began crying.

“There’s something else.”

Mark whispered, “What?”

“Your father kept copies of everything.”

“Where?”

“In a safety deposit box.”

“Which bank?”

She hesitated.

“I don’t know. But Ray does.”

A knock sounded at the safe house door.

Three sharp taps.

May you like

Then a man’s voice called from outside.

“Mark? It’s Uncle Ray.”
