Chapter 13 - Richard's Last Recording

Victor’s voice continued.

Low.

Calm.

Businesslike.

As if he were discussing drywall costs instead of my life.

“Then make sure she signs before the bank asks questions.”

Vanessa whispered:

“She won’t if Henry is involved.”

Victor:

“Keep Aldridge out.”

Richard coughed.

A bed sheet rustled.

Vanessa said:

“He’s asleep.”

Victor answered:

“He better be.”

My hands turned cold.

Then Richard’s voice came from the recording.

Weak.

Clear.

“I’m not.”

Silence.

Actual silence.

No one in Henry’s office moved.

On the recording, Vanessa inhaled sharply.

Victor said:

“Richard.”

My husband replied:

“Get out of my house.”

Victor tried to laugh.

“Let’s not make this dramatic.”

Richard:

“You are standing in my bedroom discussing how to manipulate my wife after I die.”

My throat closed.

There was my husband.

Sick.

Dying.

Still dangerous when someone crossed the line.

Victor said:

“Daniel owes me money.”

Richard:

“Then collect from Daniel.”

“The business has no assets left.”

“That is not Margaret’s problem.”

“It becomes hers when Daniel inherits.”

Richard laughed.

A rough cough followed.

“He doesn’t inherit her.”

My eyes burned.

Victor said:

“You’re being emotional.”

Richard replied:

“I have cancer. I am allowed.”

Even Lawson almost smiled.

Then Richard said:

“The house stays under Margaret’s control.”

Victor:

“Daniel says you promised it to him.”

“Someday is not today.”

There.

The casual promise.

The seed Daniel later turned into entitlement.

Richard continued:

“I said one day, after Margaret and I were gone, the house might help him and his children. I did not say he could mortgage my wife while I was still breathing.”

My chest tightened.

Vanessa whispered:

“Margaret won’t need a house this big.”

Richard:

“That is Margaret’s decision.”

Victor:

“She may not be capable of making it for long.”

My blood went cold.

They were already discussing capacity.

Before Richard died.

Richard’s voice sharpened.

“If either of you touches her medical records, finances, or legal authority, I will make sure Daniel never sees one dollar from this property.”

Vanessa said:

“You’d cut off your own son?”

Richard:

“I would protect my wife from anyone.”

Silence.

Then Victor laughed softly.

“Even him?”

“Yes.”

My tears finally came.

Not because Richard had been perfect.

Because he had known.

Because he had tried.

Because he had been carrying this while I thought the worst thing in our house was cancer.

The recording continued.

Victor said:

“You may want to think about what happens when you’re not here to enforce that.”

Richard answered:

“That’s what lawyers are for.”

Henry closed his eyes.

Victor:

“Aldridge can be dealt with.”

My head snapped toward Henry.

His face went still.

On the recording, Richard laughed again.

“Try.”

Then footsteps.

Door.

Vanessa’s voice:

“Victor.”

He answered farther away:

“Come on.”

Door shut.

Richard breathed for several seconds.

Then spoke again.

Not to them.

To the recorder.

“Henry, if you hear this, activate the clause.”

Henry’s hand tightened around the table.

Richard continued:

“Do not tell Margaret unless they try again.”

I looked at Henry.

He stared at the speaker.

Richard:

“She will be furious with me.”

I whispered:

“Yes.”

Then my husband’s recorded voice almost smiled.

“She’ll be right.”

That broke me.

I covered my face.

Joan moved beside me.

I let her.

One minute.

Maybe less.

Then I wiped my eyes.

The recording was still running.

Richard said:

“Daniel may still stop.”

Pause.

“I hope he does.”

Another cough.

“But if he chooses them over her, let him lose what he thinks he owns.”

Daniel began crying beside me.

I did not look at him.

Richard continued:

“One more thing.”

The room tightened.

“If Victor tries to enforce anything against the house, check Vanessa’s accounts.”

Emily looked up sharply.

Richard already suspected payments.

“She is not helping Daniel for free.”

My pulse kicked.

Then:

“And Henry—”

Henry leaned closer.

“If I don’t get another chance to say it, I’m sorry.”

Henry’s face changed.

Sorry for what?

The recording clicked.

Ended.

Everyone stared at Henry.

He looked shaken.

I asked:

“What was he apologizing for?”

Henry shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

I stared.

He looked at me.

“Margaret, I truly don’t.”

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Lawson moved first.

“Victor’s threat about Aldridge matters.”

He began drafting warrant requests.

Emily matched Richard’s warning to Vanessa’s $78,000.

The payments started before the recording.

Richard had noticed.

How?

Maybe bank mail.

Maybe Vanessa bragged.

Maybe he had someone watching.

Then Emily found a transfer one day after the bedroom confrontation.

Victor Hale Holdings to Vanessa Collins.

$25,000.

Memo:

PROJECT ADVANCE.

She showed me.

“He paid her the next day.”

My stomach tightened.

Reward?

Retainer?

Lawson said:

“Could be legitimate.”

I stared at him.

He shrugged.

“I know. But we prove.”

Fine.

Evidence first.

Henry’s assistant knocked.

“There’s someone in reception.”

“Who?”

“Vanessa Collins.”

Daniel stood.

“What?”

The assistant looked nervous.

“She says she wants to talk to Margaret.”

Lawson said:

“No.”

I said:

“Yes.”

Everyone turned.

Henry frowned.

“Margaret.”

“She came here.”

“She may be trying to manipulate you.”

“I know.”

I looked at Lawson.

“Can you be nearby?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa entered alone.

No makeup.

Hair tied back.

For the first time since she moved into my house, she looked unsure.

Then she saw Daniel.

Her face hardened.

“I said Margaret.”

Daniel stood.

“You were working with Victor before Dad died.”

She laughed.

“You’re just figuring that out?”

His face fell.

I watched.

Then asked:

“Why did Victor pay you?”

She looked at me.

“To keep Daniel from losing everything.”

“That is not an answer.”

“He paid me to manage him.”

Daniel whispered:

“Manage me.”

She shrugged.

“You were falling apart.”

“You were sleeping with him?”

“No.”

The speed sounded genuine.

Not proof.

I asked:

“What did you give Victor in return?”

“Information.”

“What information?”

“Daniel’s finances. Richard’s health. The house.”

My chest tightened.

“You sold him updates on my husband dying.”

Her face flickered.

“I didn’t think of it like that.”

“Of course not.”

She sat.

Then looked at Daniel.

“You want the truth?”

He said nothing.

She smiled bitterly.

“Victor never believed your company could recover.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“He kept lending because he wanted the house.”

Exactly.

Then she looked at me.

“And he wasn’t waiting for you to sign.”

My pulse kicked.

“What?”

“He had another way.”

Lawson leaned forward from the adjoining doorway.

Vanessa saw him.

Too late.

“What way?”

She hesitated.

Then:

“He wanted Daniel declared financially responsible for you.”

“Guardianship.”

“Something like it.”

“Based on fake incapacity.”

“Yes.”

“Whose idea?”

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“Mine.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

At least one clean admission.

Then she smiled.

“But Daniel chose it.”

Daniel looked up.

Vanessa said:

“I gave him the plan.”

Her eyes stayed on me.

May you like

“He said yes.”

CUT.
