Chapter 5 - Version B

Daniel vomited in the downstairs bathroom.
I heard him through the wall while Priya photographed every page of the fake prenup.
Nora stood beside the open safe.
"This wasn't improvised."
"No."
"They planned for the day you stopped paying."
I stared at Linda's note.
WHEN SHE FINALLY CUTS US OFF, USE VERSION B.
There was no confusion left.
My Christmas envelope had not started the conflict.
It had activated a plan.
Daniel returned with water on his face.
"I swear I didn't know about this."
Priya looked at him.
"You may want to stop swearing until we identify every document carrying your signature."
He sat.
"What do I do?"
"Give me your phone."
He handed it over.
"Laptop too."
"You already have it."
"Cloud passwords."
He hesitated.
I watched him.
"All of them."
His shoulders dropped.
He gave her everything.
For the next three hours, Nora and Priya built a timeline.
Eighteen months before Maple Ridge formed, Linda began sending Daniel emails about "family independence."
She repeatedly complained that accepting money from me made her feel humiliated.
Then she suggested buying an income property.
Six months later, she introduced Barrett Legal.
Three months after that, money began moving from the family "emergencies" into an escrow account.
Then Maple Ridge appeared.
Version B of the prenup was created six weeks after the LLC formation, but its metadata had been scrubbed badly.
A hidden revision field remained.
Author: EBARRETT.
Date created: July 18 of last year.
Not our wedding year.
Forgery.
Priya smiled for the first time all day.
"That is beautifully stupid."
Daniel looked sick.
"My aunt did this?"
"Her software says she did."
I asked, "What's the endgame?"
Nora pointed to the divorce memo.
"Probably two-stage."
She drew boxes on a legal pad.
"Stage one: use your money to buy and renovate the property while putting legal ownership and liability in your name."
Box two.
"Stage two: create documents making it look like you hid Maple Ridge from Daniel and used marital resources without disclosure."
Box three.
"Then if you cut the family off or seek divorce, Version B makes your supposed misconduct the trigger for a claim against your assets."
I stared.
"They wanted me to look like I stole from my own marriage."
Priya nodded.
"And Linda's company becomes a creditor either way."
Daniel whispered, "But why the refinance?"
Nora opened the lender package.
"Because $3.8 million lets them cash out."
Purchase debt: $2.1 million remaining.
Renovation debt and lines: $1 million.
The proposed refinance would pay those off and release roughly $600,000 in cash.
That cash was scheduled to be distributed as "development reimbursement" to Mercer Residential Services.
Linda.
"She was going to take six hundred thousand dollars," I said.
"At closing," Nora said. "And leave Maple Ridge with the new debt."
"In my name."
"Correct."
Daniel stood.
"I'm going to her house."
Priya blocked him.
"No."
"She did this to my wife."
The words hit strangely.
My wife.
As if he had only remembered the title after seeing the crime scene.
I looked at him.
"She did it with your help."
He flinched.
"I didn't know."
"You knew you were taking money from me. You knew your mother was using it for an investment. You knew she contacted my father. You laughed when she humiliated me this morning."
His eyes filled.
I felt nothing comforting rise in response.
"Not knowing the felony doesn't erase everything before it."
He sat back down.
My phone vibrated.
A group text.
MERCER FAMILY CHRISTMAS.
Linda had sent a long message to twenty-three relatives.
I read the first line.
We are devastated to share that Emily has been experiencing concerning financial and emotional behavior for some time.
My fingers went numb.
She claimed I had "impulsively" cut off family obligations.
She said Daniel was trying to protect me.
She said I had secretly created risky investments and had become paranoid when questioned.
Then she wrote:
Please do not confront her. We are seeking professional guidance.
Nora swore.
Priya said, "There it is."
"What?"
"The narrative."
Just like the forged documents.
Linda did not merely move money.
She built stories.
Stories for the lender.
Stories for Daniel.
Stories for court.
Now one for the family.
Replies started appearing.
Oh my God.
Poor Daniel.
We've noticed she hasn't seemed herself.
That one came from Daniel's cousin Megan.
I had seen Megan twice in six months.
Another message:
Linda, call me. This sounds like what happened at Thanksgiving.
I looked at Daniel.
"What happened at Thanksgiving?"
He frowned.
"Nothing."
I remembered.
I had asked Linda why her car insurance bill was still coming to me.
She had laughed and said I was obsessed with money.
Then she told the table I had been "forgetful lately."
A joke.
Except maybe not.
Priya asked, "Any medical power documents?"
My stomach dropped.
Daniel said, "We did estate planning last year."
"With who?"
He already knew the answer.
"Aunt Elaine."
We searched the safe.
Estate binder gone.
Priya's face hardened.
"Call the firm."
Barrett Legal's answering service picked up.
Priya identified herself as counsel and demanded copies of every document executed by Emily or Daniel Mercer.
Fifteen minutes later, a junior associate emailed a packet.
Wills.
Healthcare proxies.
Powers of attorney.
I opened mine.
My legitimate healthcare proxy named Daniel.
Then we found an amendment I had never signed.
It granted Daniel broad financial authority upon certification by a physician that I was unable to manage my affairs.
Physician name already typed:
DR. MICHAEL MERCER.
Daniel's brother.
The man who had been joking beside him while I sat giftless by the tree.
I looked at Daniel.
"Your brother is part of this?"
His face went blank.
"Michael never mentioned it."
My phone rang.
Michael.
We put him on speaker.
His first words were not hello.
"Daniel, Mom says Emily found Version B."
Nobody breathed.
Then Michael realized he was on speaker.
"Oh."
I leaned toward the phone.
"Doctor, tell me what Version B is."
Michael hung up.
Priya closed her eyes.
"Well."
Daniel stared at the dead screen.
Then a new text from Michael appeared.
DON'T TRUST MOM. SHE HAS A SIGNED CAPACITY LETTER WITH MY NAME ON IT. I NEVER SIGNED IT.
May you like
A second text followed.
AND SHE'S TAKING IT TO THE BANK TOMORROW MORNING.
