Chapter 15 - What Thomas Was Really Protecting

Mom stared at the encrypted file.
“Do not open it.”
I laughed.
“Twenty-eight years late.”
Robert entered the password from Dad’s notes.
The file unlocked.
Video.
Dad.
Recorded three weeks before he died.
He looked thin.
Tired.
But his eyes were clear.
“Hannah.”
My knees weakened.
“I hope Robert is sitting beside you.”
He was.
“I hope Chloe finally told the truth.”
She had.
“Jason probably waited too long.”
He had.
“And Linda…”
Dad paused.
Mom looked away.
“I do not know whether she will ever forgive me for what happened in 1998.”
My breath stopped.
Dad continued.
“You deserve the whole story.”
No one moved.
“Rebecca is my biological daughter.”
Rebecca cried silently beside me.
“I learned that after Samuel Lane died and Sarah contacted me.”
Mom closed her eyes.
Dad continued.
“But Rebecca is not the daughter Linda lied about.”
My hands went cold.
“You are.”
The exact line from his letter.
Then he explained.
Linda had delivered a baby girl.
Sarah had delivered Rebecca one day earlier.
Michael Brooks, Dad’s older brother, had access to the maternity ward through a maintenance contractor he owned.
Michael had been stealing from the Brooks family trust.
He believed controlling the biological lineage could give him leverage over future distributions.
So he switched identification bands.
Not once.
Twice.
He planned to make it impossible to prove which child belonged to which mother.
Then Linda’s infant died unexpectedly.
Linda woke in grief.
Saw a healthy baby she believed was hers.
And took me home.
She did not know the baby she took was neither her biological daughter nor Sarah’s.
My lungs stopped.
Dad looked into the camera.
“Hannah, Linda did something terrible.”
Mom broke.
A sound came out of her like something tearing.
“But she did not know the full truth.”
I looked at her.
Dad continued.
“Years later, Michael told her enough to frighten her. He used the secret to keep her quiet about his theft.”
So Mom had been both criminal and captive.
Not innocent.
Never innocent.
But trapped inside the first lie.
Dad continued.
“When I learned Rebecca was mine, I wanted to tell both of you immediately.”
Rebecca covered her face.
“Linda begged me not to.”
Mom whispered, “I did.”
Dad said:
“She believed losing you would destroy her.”
I laughed through tears.
“Then she spent the next decade destroying me instead.”
Mom flinched.
Dad continued.
“I chose cowardice.”
That landed.
No excuses.
“I told myself timing mattered. I told myself family stability mattered. Then I got sick.”
His breathing hitched.
“And I realized every delay was another lie.”
He had started gathering records.
Transferred the house to me.
Built the fraud trap.
Used Chloe as a witness.
Contacted Rebecca.
Asked Robert to reach me.
And tried to locate Michael.
Then Dad looked down at something off-camera.
“The answer to who you are is in the final DNA report.”
My chest tightened.
Robert opened the next page.
MATERNAL MATCH.
Name:
SARAH LANE.
Rebecca looked at me.
I looked at her.
“What?”
Dad continued.
“You are Sarah’s biological daughter.”
My knees nearly gave.
Rebecca whispered, “Then who am I?”
Dad answered.
“Rebecca is my biological daughter by Sarah.”
Silence.
Same mother.
Different fathers.
Half-sisters.
Rebecca started crying.
I could not move.
Dad continued.
“Linda raised Hannah.”
Mom’s hands shook.
“Sarah lost Hannah.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“And I failed all three of you.”
The video nearly ended.
Then Dad leaned closer.
“One final warning.”
Robert straightened.
“Michael is alive.”
I stared.
“He knows I found the records.”
Dad’s voice lowered.
“And he knows Hannah owns the house.”
The screen went black.
No one breathed.
Then the front door opened downstairs.
Police shouted.
A man answered calmly.
“I’m here to see my niece.”
Mom screamed.
Robert grabbed the poker.
I ran to the hallway.
A man in his sixties stood beneath the chandelier.
Gray hair.
Dad’s eyes.
My face shape.
He smiled at me.
“Hannah.”
My blood went cold.
Michael Brooks.
He held one document.
Original Brooks Family Trust.
And one photograph.
A newborn baby.
On the back:
HANNAH - TRUE HEIR.
He looked at Rebecca.
Then at me.
“Thomas gave you the wrong house.”
I gripped the banister.
“What does that mean?”
Michael smiled.
“It means the inheritance everyone has been fighting over…”
He lifted the trust.
“…was never Chloe’s.”
A pause.
“Never Linda’s.”
Another.
“Not even Thomas’s.”
He looked directly at me.
May you like
“It was yours before you were born.”
CUT.
