Chapter 2 - The Screenshots

The call ended because Monique hung up on me.
For three seconds, I sat in the dark with the phone pressed against my ear.
Then I got out of bed and walked toward Maya's room.
I did not storm in.
That mattered.
She was nine.
Whatever she had done, she was still a child who should have been asleep at two in the morning instead of fixing her mother's bank fraud.
I opened the door.
The glow from her night-light made the stars on her comforter look pale blue.
Maya was awake.
Her tablet rested against her knees.
One pink hair tie was twisted twice around her index finger.
That was her tell.
She did it when she knew something and was waiting for me to ask the right question.
"Maya."
She looked up.
"Aunt Monique called."
The hair tie tightened around her finger.
"Is she mad?"
"Very."
Maya looked at the tablet.
I sat on the edge of her bed.
"What did you do?"
She swallowed.
"I sent the pictures."
My pulse kicked.
"What pictures?"
She unlocked the tablet.
Monique's WhatsApp account opened.
Not Maya's.
Monique's.
I stared at the profile photo.
"How do you have this?"
"Aunt Monique used my tablet when she slept here."
Three months earlier.
The same week she asked for temporary access to my bank account.
"She said her phone was charging. She forgot to log out."
I felt a cold pressure settle behind my ribs.
"Have you been reading her messages?"
Maya's eyes dropped.
"Not before you cried."
Not perfect.
Not malicious.
Still a boundary we would discuss later.
"Show me."
She opened a conversation between Monique and Chad.
The messages started four days before the transfer.
Chad: Once funds land, don't touch for 24h.
Monique: Kesha will freak.
Chad: Your parents will calm her down.
Monique: Dad says she always folds when family gets involved.
My jaw clenched.
Maya scrolled.
Chad: Need statement showing source account has 150 minimum.
Monique: I have her pdf.
Chad: And the support letter?
Monique: Mom is handling.
My skin went cold.
"What support letter?"
Maya shook her head.
"There are more."
She opened screenshots she had saved.
One showed a PDF preview.
FAMILY INVESTMENT SUPPORT LETTER.
My name at the bottom.
Kesha Vance.
A signature that looked close enough to mine to make my stomach turn.
Another screenshot showed a message from Chad.
If recall comes, we say Kesha invested. We have signed letter + Monique authorized user. Receiving bank won't reverse on family dispute.
I stopped breathing for a second.
This was not just theft.
They had built a story around it.
A story where I was an investor who got nervous after sending money.
"Maya, what did you send?"
She opened my bank's fraud portal.
I recognized the case screen.
I had left it open on my laptop that afternoon while I took a call from the leasing office.
Maya had not guessed a password.
She had not broken into anything.
She had seen the button labeled ADD EVIDENCE.
"I put the screenshots there," she said.
My hands went cold.
"All of them?"
"The ones where they talked about taking it."
"Did you write anything?"
She showed me.
Possible proof they planned transfer before my mom knew. Please look.
No fake identity.
No pretending to be me.
Just a child using an already-open fraud case to send evidence she thought mattered.
My throat tightened.
"How did you know this would freeze anything?"
Maya frowned.
"I didn't."
There it was.
The answer I needed.
She had not become a tiny cybercriminal overnight.
She had sent screenshots.
Adults at the bank had done the rest.
My phone rang again.
Not Monique.
The bank.
I answered in the hallway.
A fraud investigator named Darren Cole introduced himself.
"Ms. Vance, I apologize for the hour, but the receiving institution in Dubai responded to our recall request."
I looked toward Maya's room.
"They froze the transfer?"
"They froze the remaining balance in the beneficiary account and related outgoing wires pending review."
"Because of screenshots my daughter uploaded?"
A pause.
"The screenshots materially strengthened the fraud claim. We had already sent a SWIFT recall based on your report. The receiving bank escalated after reviewing the evidence."
I leaned against the wall.
That distinction mattered.
Maya had not frozen Dubai.
She had handed adults a piece they were missing.
"How much is still there?"
Keyboard clicks.
"One hundred twenty-one thousand, four hundred sixty dollars appears restrained."
My stomach dropped.
Twenty-eight thousand five hundred forty dollars was already gone.
"Where did the rest go?"
"Some hotel and travel charges. One transfer to a UAE free-zone company. One attempted transfer to a U.S. payment processor."
"Company name?"
"Gulf Horizon Trade FZE."
I wrote it on the back of an overdue tuition notice.
Darren continued.
"We also need to discuss the document you uploaded."
"I didn't upload it. My daughter did."
"Understood. The support letter is concerning."
"I didn't sign it."
"Then I recommend you treat this as potential identity misuse, not only an unauthorized transfer."
My pulse hammered in my throat.
"What happens now?"
"Do not sign anything your sister or family sends you. Do not characterize the money as a loan or investment in writing. Preserve messages. We may refer the matter to law enforcement depending on findings."
I closed my eyes.
Family is forever.
My mother's voice from three days ago.
Money comes and goes.
The bank investigator lowered his voice.
"Ms. Vance, one more thing."
"What?"
"The beneficiary onboarding packet for Gulf Horizon lists you as the original source-of-funds sponsor."
I gripped the phone.
"I have never heard of Gulf Horizon."
"There's more."
He hesitated.
"The packet lists you as a ten-percent beneficial investor."
The floor felt cold under my bare feet.
"That's impossible."
"We will send the record through secure delivery."
My phone buzzed before he finished.
A document landed in my bank inbox.
GULF HORIZON TRADE FZE.
Beneficial ownership declaration.
Monique Vance: 25%.
Charles 'Chad' Merritt: 65%.
Kesha Vance: 10%.
My date of birth.
My home address.
The last four digits of my Social Security number.
And underneath it all, another version of my signature.
I looked through Maya's open doorway.
She was still twisting the pink hair tie around her finger.
May you like
My sister had not only taken my money.
She had taken my identity with it.
