Chapter 6 - The Way Out

I expected yelling.

Instead, I became calm.

“So you were planning to leave.”

Michael looked down.

“I didn't know what I wanted.”

“You bought a condo.”

“I was confused.”

“You emptied the kids' account.”

“I was going to replace it.”

“You moved our savings last night.”

“Because you were angry.”

I laughed.

“Listen to yourself.”

He stepped closer.

“I still love you.”

That sentence disgusted me more than the affair.

“No. You love being forgiven.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Tom is feeding you half-truths because his marriage is dead.”

“Your messages killed both marriages.”

“Rachel chased me.”

“And you tripped into a condo?”

He flinched.

Good.

Then the front door opened.

My mother walked in.

Behind her was Rachel.

I stared.

“What are you doing here?”

Mom raised both hands.

“Please. Everyone needs to calm down.”

Rachel looked like she'd been crying.

“Sarah, I'm sorry.”

“No.”

“I made a terrible mistake.”

“Eight months of mistakes?”

She looked at Michael.

He immediately looked away.

That was interesting.

Rachel whispered, “He told me he was leaving you.”

Michael snapped, “Rachel.”

I turned to him.

She kept going.

“He told me your marriage had been over for years.”

“Stop talking.”

Mom gasped.

I stared at Rachel.

“Why are you telling me this now?”

She began crying harder.

“Because he lied to me too.”

I almost laughed.

“You want sympathy?”

“No.”

“Then what do you want?”

She looked at Michael with hatred.

“I want you to know the condo wasn't for me.”

The room went silent.

Michael went pale.

I said, “What?”

May you like

Rachel wiped her face.

“There was another woman.”
