Chapter 1 - The Steel Box

A blue steel lockbox sat in the trunk beneath an old moving blanket.
On top of it was a white envelope with my name written in block letters.
ELEANOR. OPEN THIS FIRST.
I stood there for almost a full minute before touching it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Ellie,
The company debt is real, but it is not yours. The house is protected. Your retirement is protected. And before you believe anything Mark or Lucas tells you, call the number taped under the lid.
Do not mention the box.
Do not mention the account.
And do not sign anything.
—R.
My knees went weak.
I lifted the lockbox. It was heavier than it looked.
Underneath it lay three things: a flash drive, a folder marked HALE FAMILY TRUST, and a bank statement.
I stared at the number on the statement.
$8,417,209.63.
For several seconds, I genuinely thought I was reading it wrong.
Eight million.
Not debt.
Not bankruptcy.
Eight million dollars in an account I had never known existed.
My phone rang.
Mark.
I nearly dropped the statement.
“Mom,” he said, sounding irritated. “Did Dad’s lawyer contact you?”
“No.”
A pause.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Another pause.
Then his voice changed.
Too careful.
“If anyone asks you to sign something, call me first.”
I looked at Robert’s note in my hand.
Do not sign anything.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because Dad was a mess financially.”
“You didn’t come to his funeral.”
“Mom, don’t start.”
“I’m not starting anything.”
He sighed. “Lucas and I are trying to protect you.”
The lie came too smoothly.
I looked down at the trust folder.
On the first page, beneath Robert’s signature, were two names.
Mine.
And a second trustee.
Not Mark.
Not Lucas.
A woman named Dana Whitcomb.
“Protect me from what?” I asked.
Mark hesitated.

Then he said the one thing that made the hair rise on my arms.
“From whatever Dad hid in that old Ford.”
