Chapter 3 - The TraitorThree members carried separate portions.

Olivia carried the authentication key.
That was why she survived.
Her team leader ordered her out through a secondary drainage route while the others remained behind to create the appearance that the Ledger had been destroyed with them.
They knew Olivia was the only person who could eventually reconstruct it.
The three scars on her back came from metal fragments when part of the underground structure collapsed during her escape.
The recovery team found her nearly seventy kilometers from the original site.
Hale’s voice dropped.
“And afterward?”
“I was erased.”
“By whom?”
“People who understood the leak had come from our own side.”
The decision had been brutal but logical.
If Olivia Mitchell officially survived Grey Lantern, whoever had betrayed the unit would search for her.
So the military created a death record inside the compartmented program.
Olivia received a new civilian identity, underwent years of rehabilitation, and eventually became part of a dormant counterintelligence effort designed to identify the original traitor.
Hale struggled to understand the final part.
“Then why enlist as an ordinary recruit?”
“Because the leak became active again.”
She reached into the waistband of her training pants and removed a tiny sealed memory wafer.
Hale’s expression changed.
Olivia placed it on the table.
“Six months ago, someone attempted to access an old Grey Lantern financial channel.”
“Who?”
“That’s what I was sent here to determine.”
Hale stared at her.
This installation contained logistics officers, intelligence instructors, contractors, and several people who had served in commands connected to the original Grey Lantern operation.
Olivia’s presence at boot camp was not about becoming a soldier from the beginning.
It was cover.
Someone believed an anonymous recruit would attract less attention than an investigator.
Until Ethan tore her shirt.
“You were supposed to stay invisible,” Hale said.
“Yes.”
“And now half a platoon has seen the mark.”
“Yes.”
Hale rubbed his forehead.
“What happens to the investigation?”
Olivia looked directly at him.
“That depends on whether the person we’re looking for knows what the mark means.”
Hale immediately understood the danger.
Almost none of the recruits would recognize it.
Most instructors would not either.
But anyone connected to Grey Lantern would.
Which meant the humiliation in the training yard might have accidentally done something Olivia’s months of quiet surveillance had failed to accomplish.
It might force the traitor to react.
The reaction came sooner than expected.
At 21:14 that night, installation cybersecurity detected an unauthorized attempt to access an archived personnel database.
The search terms were narrow.
MITCHELL, OLIVIA.
GREY LANTERN.
GL-12.
The request originated inside the administration network.
Investigators traced it to a terminal belonging to civilian training contractor Harold Voss.
Hale knew the name.
Voss had worked intelligence logistics nine years earlier.
More importantly, he had helped coordinate aircraft routing during the Grey Lantern mission.
Olivia had suspected him for months.
Now he had exposed himself.
Military investigators quietly locked down the building.
Voss attempted to leave using a maintenance exit.
He was detained before reaching the parking area.
The search of his office uncovered an encrypted storage device hidden behind a removable wall plate.
Its contents finally answered the question that had haunted Marcus Hale for nearly a decade.
Grey Lantern had been betrayed for money.
Voss had sold the unit’s extraction coordinates to a foreign intermediary, believing the entire team would be killed and the Cinder Ledger captured.
When the Ledger never appeared, he spent years assuming it had been destroyed.
Then fragments of the old financial network began resurfacing.
He became afraid that someone from Grey Lantern had survived.
Olivia’s exposed mark confirmed his fear.
His frantic attempt to investigate her that evening gave counterintelligence the probable cause they needed to move against him.
The resulting investigation reached beyond Voss.
Two former officials were arrested for helping conceal financial records tied to the betrayal.
A third had died years earlier.
Several classified reviews were reopened.
Families of the Grey Lantern operators were privately informed that the original mission had not failed because of their loved ones.
The unit had been betrayed.
Its members had stayed behind deliberately so the Ledger—and the people named inside it—would remain protected.
As for Ethan Cole, the consequences were less historic but far more immediate.
He was removed from training pending investigation for assault, harassment, and conduct violations.

His instructors later made something clear to him that rank, classified operations, and secret symbols had nothing to do with.
Even if Olivia had been exactly who Ethan believed she was—an ordinary quiet recruit—his actions would still have been unacceptable.
