Chapter 6 - The Woman in Red

I called Jason immediately.

No answer.

Again.

Voicemail.

Maya took the phone from me on the third attempt.

“If Gabriel has him, repeated calls tell Gabriel we’re panicking.”

“I am panicking.”

“Then do it quietly.”

She handed the phone back.

I hated her for being right.

At 1:15 a.m., Lily called.

Her sister had taken her to Mount Sinai because she was cramping.

The baby was fine.

Lily was not.

“I need to tell you something,” she said.

I looked at Maya.

“Go ahead.”

“Jason has another phone.”

“I assumed.”

“No. I mean another phone he never let me touch. Gray case. No apps on the screen.”

“Where is it?”

“In my overnight bag.”

My pulse jumped.

“How?”

“He left it in the hotel bathroom two days ago. I thought it was mine.”

“Do not turn it on.”

“It’s already on.”

I closed my eyes.

“Lily.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Where’s the bag?”

“At the hospital.”

“I’m coming.”

The phone looked ordinary.

Cheap Android.

No passcode.

That was the first thing that frightened me.

People hiding harmless things use passcodes.

People hiding catastrophic things sometimes rely on nobody knowing the device exists.

Maya connected it to an isolated forensic laptop.

Messages loaded.

Most were between J and G.

Jason and Gabriel.

G: SHE MUST APPEAR VOLATILE AFTER DECREE.

J: CARD WILL WORK.

G: IT HAS TO. SHE NEEDS TO LOOK LIKE SHE INTERRUPTED A PURCHASE SHE COULD HAVE QUIETLY STOPPED.

J: WHAT ABOUT LILY?

G: USE HER.

Lily’s face tightened.

She read without blinking.

Another message.

J: SHE’S PREGNANT.

G: EVEN BETTER.

Lily covered her mouth.

I wanted to apologize for Jason.

For myself.

For every adult in the room who had turned her pregnancy into leverage.

Instead I pushed a cup of water toward her.

Her fingers shook around it.

“Keep reading,” she said.

The boutique scene had been planned ten days in advance.

Jason would purchase the diamond.

I would receive an automated fraud alert because the amount exceeded his usual spend.

Gabriel assumed I would intervene personally.

A crisis videographer would capture me confronting my newly divorced husband and his pregnant girlfriend.

The footage would support the board challenge.

But my attorney had advised me to remove Jason as an authorized user immediately after the decree.

That part had not been in Gabriel’s model.

The card declined.

The humiliation shifted.

Jason lost control.

And I saw Mercer Consulting.

Their trap had cracked open because of one routine banking decision.

Lily wiped her eyes with the heel of her hand.

“What does he mean by ‘diamond closes Breen’?”

I searched the messages.

There it was.

G: DIAMOND CLOSES BREEN. THEN FIVE VOTES.

Daniel Breen.

Board director.

Hospitalized after his credential was stolen.

Maya opened the stone’s certification number from the boutique listing.

A 5.02-carat D-flawless diamond.

Provenance included a private estate sale.

The estate name was hidden.

We subpoenaed nothing at 2:00 a.m.

But rich people’s assets leave insurance trails.

Maya found one through an industry database.

The diamond had previously belonged to Claire Breen.

Daniel’s late wife.

He had sold it privately after her death.

Gabriel had acquired it through Mercer Consulting.

Then consigned it to the boutique.

Jason was supposed to buy it back with my credit.

“Why?” Lily asked.

I stared at the screen.

“Because Daniel would recognize it.”

Maya nodded.

“A message.”

Not a gift.

Not laundering alone.

A threat.

Gabriel had taken a dead woman’s diamond, moved it through shell companies, and arranged for Jason to buy it publicly with Vesper money on the day of my divorce.

If Daniel saw the transaction, he would know Gabriel could reach private things from his family’s past.

The ring was a knife with a price tag.

Lily whispered, “Jason knew?”

I scrolled.

J: BREENS STONE IS CREEPY.

G: THAT’S WHY IT WORKS.

J: I DON’T WANT LILY WEARING IT.

G: SHE WON’T.

Lily stared at those last two words.

Her face broke.

She started crying without sound.

“He told me it was for our engagement.”

I reached for her hand.

She pulled away.

Not from me.

From everybody.

The phone chimed.

A scheduled message had just unlocked.

Jason had set it hours earlier.

SOPHIA - IF YOU HAVE THIS PHONE, I’M EITHER GONE OR I FINALLY GOT SCARED ENOUGH TO DO ONE THING RIGHT.

Below it was a video attachment.

Jason sat in our old kitchen.

Date: six months ago.

He straightened his cuff three times.

Then looked directly into the lens.

“I met Sophia because Gabriel paid me to.”

Lily stopped breathing beside me.

Jason continued.

“I stayed because I liked the life. Then because I loved parts of it. Then because leaving became more dangerous than staying.”

He rubbed his face.

“Gabriel has files on everyone. Mine is fraud. Breen’s is his son. Two directors have tax problems. One has a second family.”

He leaned closer.

“The board vote isn’t the end. It’s cover.”

The video paused as Jason looked offscreen.

Then:

“Once Sophia is removed, Gabriel triggers Bellweather’s incapacity clause using the postnup and a competency petition.”

I whispered, “There is no incapacity clause.”

Maya looked at me.

“Not in your copy.”

Jason’s video continued.

“He has another version.”

My throat tightened.

“He needs Sophia’s voice, signature, and public behavior to make it look real.”

Then Jason said something that made Maya sit forward.

“He also needs a witness who looks independent.”

A photograph appeared inside the video.

The crisis videographer from the boutique.

Beside him was a woman in a red coat.

I recognized her.

She had been standing near the pillar opposite mine.

Watching me.

Not shopping.

Jason said her name.

“Dr. Elaine Porter. Forensic psychiatrist.”

My fingers went numb.

Maya searched her.

Elaine Porter was scheduled to address Vesper’s board at 9:00 a.m.

Topic:

EXECUTIVE CAPACITY DURING ACUTE PERSONAL CRISIS.

Lily whispered, “They already decided what you are before they examine you.”

My phone buzzed.

Board notice.

LOCATION CHANGED.

Meeting moved from Vesper headquarters to the Langham Hotel.

The same hotel where Lily had photographed Jason and Gabriel with the diamond.

Then another message appeared.

From Gabriel.

BRING THE LOCKER DRIVE, SOPHIA.
