Chapter 7 - A NEW FOUNDATION

When Marcus returned home, the late morning sun was pouring through the large bay windows of the living room. Nia was sitting at the kitchen island, eating a bowl of cereal. She looked up, apprehension written all over her young face.

Marcus walked over, pulled up a stool, and sat beside her. He reached into his pocket and placed the small velvet pouch on the granite countertop.

Nia’s breath caught. She reached out with trembling fingers and loosened the drawstrings. The gold locket slid out onto her palm.

“You got it back,” she whispered, massive tears rolling down her cheeks.

“I got most of it back,” Marcus said softly, wiping a tear from her face. “I am so sorry about the pictures, Nia. I couldn’t get those back.”

Nia shook her head, clutching the locket to her chest. “It’s okay, Dad. I remember what she looks like. I have you. That’s all I need.”

Marcus smiled, a profound sense of relief washing over him. He stood up, grabbed the department store bag he had left by the door, and placed the fresh, pristine white sneakers on the floor in front of her.

“Put them on,” he said gently.

Nia slipped off her ruined, peeling shoes and slid her feet into the new sneakers. They fit perfectly. They were comfortable, supportive, and clean.

“From now on, it’s just you and me,” Marcus said, tying the laces for her. “Nobody will ever make you feel like you don’t matter in this house again. You are my priority. Always.”

Nia threw her arms around her father’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder. The house was quiet, empty of the toxic presence that had suffocated them for the past two years. As Marcus held his daughter, looking out at the sunlit driveway, he knew the road ahead would require healing, but for the first time in a long time, their foundation was solid.
