Chapter 4 - Lauren's Original Lie

Lauren backed into Arthur’s bookcase.

“No.”

Daniel held up the payment image.

“It has your name.”

“That doesn’t mean what you think.”

“Then tell me what it means.”

Her eyes moved to Evelyn.

Again.

Daniel saw it this time.

So did Thomas.

So did I.

Lauren whispered, “I signed a confidentiality agreement.”

Daniel laughed.

“For seventy-five thousand dollars?”

“It wasn’t for the affair story.”

“What was it for?”

She swallowed.

“Consulting.”

I almost admired the nerve.

“What did you consult on?” I asked.

She looked at me.

“Public relations.”

I nodded toward the date.

“Six days before you accused me of sleeping with someone else.”

“No.”

“No what?”

“No, I did not accuse you six days later.”

Daniel frowned.

“She’s right.”

The public accusation came later.

But the first photograph reached Daniel that week.

Lauren corrected herself too late.

She knew the exact sequence.

Thomas said, “Tell us about the hotel photographs.”

Lauren sat.

For the first time, she looked tired.

“I saw Claire at the Peachtree Grand.”

“You said you followed her.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

“She was acting secretive.”

I laughed.

“I was interviewing with an Army recruiter.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What?”

“Reserve officer program. I was planning ahead because your family kept reminding me I had no career of my own.”

His face tightened.

“You never told me.”

“I planned to after the interview.”

Lauren said, “She met a man.”

“Yes. Captain Eric Monroe.”

“Went upstairs.”

“To a hotel conference suite rented for recruitment interviews.”

Lauren’s mouth tightened.

Daniel looked at me.

“You can prove that?”

I opened my file.

Of course I could.

Interview appointment.

Recruiting office memo.

Hotel meeting-room log.

Captain Monroe’s sworn statement from years later when I appealed the old allegations during my security-clearance process.

Daniel read it.

His face drained.

Lauren snapped, “I did not know that.”

I looked at her.

“You never asked.”

Daniel flinched.

The sentence belonged to both of them.

Thomas pulled the hotel security log.

Arthur had obtained it six months before his death.

Claire Bennett entered at 3:08 p.m.

Captain Monroe entered separately.

Conference Suite 712.

Four other candidates checked in within the next hour.

No guest room access.

No overnight stay.

Lauren’s story collapsed in six lines.

Daniel stared at her.

“You said you saw Claire go into a bedroom.”

Lauren’s voice cracked.

“I saw her go upstairs with a man.”

“You said bedroom.”

“I assumed.”

“You testified to me like you knew.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

He looked at Evelyn.

Same phrase.

Protect you.

Family poison disguised as care.

I said, “Who told you to follow me?”

Lauren’s jaw tightened.

“No one.”

“Then why were you there?”

“I was meeting someone.”

“Who?”

She stopped.

Thomas opened the Knox invoice again.

Ashford Consulting had hired the investigator.

Knox’s report said a female source alerted him to my location.

Female source initials:

L.B.

Lauren Blake.

Daniel whispered, “You called the investigator.”

She said nothing.

“Why?”

“I thought Claire was cheating.”

“Before you had evidence.”

“I had suspicion.”

“Whose?”

Lauren’s face hardened.

“Mine.”

Then Arthur’s old financial investigator, a woman named Dana Brooks, arrived at Thomas’s request.

She carried a tablet and a banker’s box.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.”

Thomas said, “You’re not.”

Dana looked at Lauren.

“I found the source of the $75,000.”

Lauren went still.

Not Ashford directly.

A private trust account.

Evelyn Prescott Family Reserve.

The payment moved through Ashford and then to Lauren.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You paid her.”

Evelyn said, “I funded consulting work.”

Dana opened the underlying memo.

Description:

PERSONAL MATTER - D.P.

Daniel’s initials.

I looked at Evelyn.

“What personal matter?”

She did not answer.

Lauren stood.

“I am leaving.”

Daniel blocked the door.

“No.”

She stared.

“You don’t get to imprison me because you finally regret your divorce.”

He stepped aside.

Good.

He was learning slowly.

Thomas said, “Lauren, if you leave, this investigation continues.”

She stopped.

“Investigation?”

“Arthur had already referred possible corporate fraud for independent review.”

Her face changed.

“You don’t know what you’re touching.”

I heard it.

Not denial.

Warning.

I stepped closer.

“What were you paid to do?”

Her eyes filled.

For the first time, she looked less like the woman who stole my marriage and more like someone who had spent ten years sleeping beside a live wire.

She whispered, “I was paid to make Daniel believe you were unfaithful.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

I felt no triumph.

Only confirmation.

He said, “By who?”

Lauren looked toward Evelyn.

Then away.

“I was told the pregnancy problem was already handled.”

Daniel’s face went white.

“What pregnancy problem?”

Lauren answered before Evelyn could stop her.

“She said the clinic would make sure you never believed those babies were yours.”

Dana asked Lauren for the account where she deposited the $75,000.

Lauren refused at first.

Her attorney whispered to her.

Then she provided it.

The money had not remained there long.

Twenty-five thousand went to a condo deposit.

Ten thousand paid credit-card debt.

The rest moved through three transfers Daniel had never seen.

One went back to Ashford Consulting.

Thomas frowned.

“Why return money to the company that paid you?”

Lauren shook her head.

“I didn’t.”

Dana enlarged the authorization.

Online access from an IP address registered to the Prescott estate.

Date: two days after Lauren received the money.

Lauren went pale.

“Evelyn had my banking login.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

“She helped me set up the account.”

The room tightened.

The payment to Lauren had not merely bought a lie.

Her financial life had been folded into the same machinery afterward.

I looked at her.

“You took their money and then let them keep access to you.”

She swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought it meant I belonged.”

For one second, I saw the trap from her side.

Not innocence.

Hunger.

Evelyn had fed it.

May you like

Then used it.

CUT.
