Chapter 12 - The Dead Man's Secret

Michael's face filled the monitor again.
I reached toward the screen without meaning to.
His recording had been made in our old kitchen.
I recognized the chipped blue mug behind him.
"If Anna sees this, then I didn't get to explain it myself."
My throat tightened.
Dominic stood behind me, silent.
"The money with my name on it is bait. I reversed pieces of Marco's transfers through trace accounts. Each reversal maps the next shell. If I keep following them, I can prove where the theft ends."
He looked off camera.
A sound in the hall.
Then back.
"Marco thinks Harris is his partner. He's wrong. Harris isn't Harris. His real name is Daniel Voss."
Dominic swore under his breath.
Michael continued.
"Voss worked Calderone medical logistics years ago. He knows how to create a war and sell medicine to both sides. Now he's doing the same thing with companies."
I wiped my face with the heel of my hand.
"Michael, why didn't you tell me?"
The recording could not answer.
"If something happens to me, don't assume Dominic ordered it. He has blood on his hands, but this isn't his play."
Dominic's expression hardened.
"He always had a way with compliments."
I ignored him.
Michael leaned toward the camera.
"Voss needs Dominic angry. He needs him pointing at Vincent Calderone. Marco is useful because Marco already wants a distraction. Neither one understands that Voss plans to own whatever survives."
The video ended.
My phone rang immediately.
Dominic looked at the number.
"Vincent."
"Calderone?"
He answered.
"What?"
A man's voice came through, rough and controlled.
"Your doctor is Daniel Voss."
Dominic looked at the screen.
"I know."
"Then you're late."
"He has a child."
"I heard."
"You know where?"
"Moretti Terminal Four."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
"How do you know?"
"Because Voss used it when he worked for my uncle. Before we threw him out."
I leaned toward the phone.
"Why was he thrown out?"
Vincent paused.
"Who is that?"
"Anna Reyes."
The silence changed.
"Michael's wife."
I gripped the table.
"You knew him too."
"Not well."
"Everybody knew my husband except me."
Vincent exhaled.
"Mrs. Reyes, Voss doesn't care about your daughter. He cares about leverage."
"He threatened to kill her."
"He'll kill her if it buys him what he wants. That's different."
"What does he want?"
"Dominic."
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
Vincent continued.
"Your son wasn't Voss's target."
Dominic went still.
"What?"
"You were."
My skin went cold.
"Explain."
"Kill Ethan and you start a war. Fail to kill Ethan but convince you Calderone tried, you still start a war. Either way you move exactly where Voss wants you."
Dominic looked at the map on the wall.
"Then why Lily?"
"Mistake. Witness. Pressure."
A second call cut in on my phone.
Unknown.
I answered.
Lily was crying.
"Mommy."
"I'm here."
Voss took the phone.
"You brought the card?"
"Yes."
"Good."
"Let her go."
"Bring Dominic Moretti to Terminal Four."
Dominic stepped closer.
Voss heard him breathe.
"There he is."
A metal scrape sounded behind Lily.
She whimpered.
"You have twenty minutes."
"If you touch her—"
"Anna."
His voice went soft.
"Ask Dominic what happened the first time Michael came to Terminal Four."
The line disconnected.
I turned toward Dominic.
May you like
He looked away.
