Chapter 11 - The Conference Room Again

Two weeks later Mara returned to the same wood-paneled conference room. This time an Inspector General investigator and an attorney sat across from her. Kessler wasn't there. The investigator explained that witnesses and officials whose decisions were under review would be interviewed separately.

Mara almost smiled. A room didn't belong to the person with the loudest voice after all.

She was reminded that the inquiry existed to gather facts, not to announce findings. She disclosed her family connection, the records-request history, the reporter's call, and her temporary access restriction. She produced Aaron's photograph with his written permission, leaving the original in a protective sleeve.

“Why did you pursue this while working in acquisitions?” the investigator asked.

“Because I thought the system had already decided my brother was a liar,” Mara said. “And I made mistakes trying to prove it wrong.”

“What mistakes?”

She told the entire story about her conversation with the reporter. The investigator wrote it down, including the fact that she had not passed along a restricted report. Mara didn't ask for praise. She'd finally understood that a truthful statement could contain actions she regretted.

Later, through her own attorney, Reyes confirmed that she had given an independent statement about preparing the 2014 timeline. She acknowledged signing a revised account despite inconsistencies she had noticed. She also explained why she had preserved an unauthorized personal copy of a transportation invoice and offered to surrender it through counsel.

In the corridor, Reyes stopped Mara on her way out.

“I'm not ready to forgive you,” Reyes said.

“I understand.”

“But I told them what I knew. I wanted you to hear that from me.”

As Reyes walked away, a staff officer appeared with an archival box and an accompanying chain-of-custody form. The box was labeled MERIDIAN FIELD SERVICES — OCTOBER 2014. The officer checked the conference-room number with the records specialist who accompanied her.

This time Mara didn't follow it. She didn't reach for her phone. The investigator had already explained that records personnel were preserving the old files through authorized channels.

The box went into the room. The door closed.

For the first time in twelve years, she could bear not knowing what happened on the other side.
