Chapter 7 - The Woman in the Photograph

Jo's first thought was that Luis had built a second family. She hated herself for having it, but the woman in the photograph was young, smiling, and familiar enough with the child to be a parent. Jo had spent two years certain Luis loved Elena and Rosa. Now a piece of paper made that certainty feel fragile.

Kim cautioned her against making a relationship out of an image. The photograph had a print date after Luis disappeared, but digital dates could reflect when a picture was copied. Investigators traced the studio watermark and identified the woman as Ana Morales, a former tenant in a building connected to Nathan's renovation company. Her son had been injured in an electrical fire that she claimed the landlord ignored.

Ana had contacted Luis to report forged safety approvals. He had asked her to keep copies of correspondence because a city inspector might later deny receiving warnings. She said he was the first official who listened without suggesting she move. The photograph had been placed in the crate with documents identifying Ana as a witness, not because Luis had a secret family.

Jo felt relief, then shame. Her impulse had been to protect the version of Luis she loved rather than allow evidence to mean what it meant. She promised herself she would not repeat that mistake when the next unexpected object appeared.

Ana agreed to a recorded interview. She remembered Luis telling her he was going to confront Nathan with records proving inspections had been backdated. He had asked her to go somewhere safe because his questions might draw attention to her son. When she asked if he was afraid, he said, "Afraid isn't a reason to let somebody else's child get hurt." The words sounded like him in a way no badge ever could.

Webb's attorney denied wrongdoing and disputed the timeline. Marco submitted purchase documents showing he acquired the house after Luis vanished; he argued that inherited renovations were not evidence he had any role in concealing a detective. The fact that Marco was not the original owner complicated Jo's early accusation but didn't fully explain his behavior when he saw the badge.

After reviewing messages sent from Marco's business account, investigators learned he had been warned about the hidden pipe chase before buying the house. A seller's representative told him that old items from a former police investigation might still be present and suggested a thorough inspection. Marco ignored the warning because he wanted the closing finished. Later, when work began, a contractor reported finding a police emblem. Marco instructed the contractor to leave the wall closed until his lawyers reviewed the situation.

That conduct deserved scrutiny. It did not prove he kidnapped Luis. Jo wrote the distinction down, grateful she no longer had to defend the accusation she'd hurled at him in the bathroom.

A new forensic comparison found traces on the work clothing consistent with Luis's DNA profile. The result showed the clothes likely belonged to him. It did not establish where he was or what happened afterward. The search team expanded work to the abandoned property where Webb's company had temporarily stored vehicles during the renovation.

Elena asked Jo to sit beside her at a community meeting about unsafe housing. Ana was speaking. Rosa had made signs for the audience, each one asking for accurate inspections and clear safety notices. Jo watched Elena applaud a woman whose child had survived a fire, realizing how many families Luis had tried to help without telling anybody the details.

After the meeting Ana approached Elena and said, "Your husband didn't promise he could fix it. He promised to write down what I told him so nobody could pretend they hadn't heard."

Elena cried quietly. The sentence gave her something she could pass to Rosa: a father who listened and kept promises he actually had the power to keep.

The next morning investigators searched the old vehicle yard. Beneath a collapsed storage shed they found a shallow buried container with decayed papers and one personal item Jo recognized from Luis's desk: a small compass Rosa had given him for Father's Day.

The compass was wrapped in the same kind of plastic used inside the brownstone wall.
