Chapter 10 - Rosa Draws the Line

Rosa read Anthony's letter at her kitchen table while Emma sat opposite her. Claire stayed by the window. The two mothers did not resemble each other in anything but the way they held themselves when they were close to tears.

"He knew," Rosa said after a long time.

Emma nodded. "He knew more than he told."

"Did he ever think of calling me?"

"Often. He was ashamed. He also feared people would take the recognition away from him. I don't have a kinder explanation."

Rosa carefully placed the paper flat. "I never asked them to take away what he did. I asked them to say what Samuel did."

Emma held her eyes. "I am sorry we made those seem like the same request."

After Emma left, Rosa asked Claire about Owen. Claire admitted what she'd done with the photograph. Rosa had already seen it online. She was less interested in another apology than in what Claire planned to repair.

"I've written to him privately," Claire said. "I've offered to cover the costs of counseling for his daughter if the family wants that. I've asked people to take the copies down."

"Did you tell them not to share the picture because Owen is a person, or because sharing it could hurt your campaign?"

Claire felt the answer lodge in her throat. "At first, the second one."

Rosa opened her drawer, took out a small photograph of Samuel laughing beside a pickup truck, and handed it to Claire.

"People used to tell me my son died a hero," she said. "I hated that. It was a way of ending the conversation. I wanted to know whether he was scared, whether he called for help, whether anyone held his hand. Hero was an answer to questions I hadn't asked."

"Owen remembers him saying his name."

Rosa's face changed. "Then let Owen tell me when he's ready. Not you."

Claire returned the photograph to Rosa. She had come wanting forgiveness and left with a task more difficult than gathering evidence: learning to stop at someone else's boundary.

That night she recorded a short statement asking viewers not to circulate the image of Owen. She accepted responsibility for posting it and avoided mentioning the case while speaking about his privacy. The comments turned ugly. Some called her weak; others said this proved she'd invented the rescue. Claire left the statement up.
