Chapter 17 - The Wall of Names

The recommendation came six weeks later. The installation museum would replace the inaccurate account with a sourced description of the rescue. It identified Samuel Vega as a medic who reentered the southern passage to assist wounded personnel. It credited Anthony Shaw with coordinating the extraction aircraft and helping the team at the northern clearing. It acknowledged other rescuers by name wherever the evidence supported them.
The removed wording about Samuel's supposed failure to return would not appear anywhere in the revised display. The museum also added a section explaining which details remained uncertain, rather than offering one heroic image as the entire truth.
The Army had accepted a request to examine the corresponding historical records. No award outcome had been decided, and the review of Whitaker's approval of the original summary was continuing. June made sure the families understood those limits.
Claire read the recommendation three times. It offered revised sentences and requests for evidence, not dramatic arrests. She could finally breathe.
Daniel called Rosa before he called anyone else. Emma sent a letter of apology without asking for forgiveness in return. Owen permitted June to quote a short portion of his statement on the exhibit, but declined all public appearances. The museum respected that choice.
A smaller dedication took place in spring. There was no grand podium confrontation. A simple wood-and-glass wall held the new account, photographs supplied with permission, and a list of rescue team members. The commemorative medal remained in its case beside Anthony's photograph, described as a unit tribute rather than proof that one man acted alone.
Daniel stepped toward Claire, now wearing a dark blue jacket instead of the leather one. "Would you walk with me?" he asked.
They approached the wall together. Claire found Sam's name first. She could not have said why seeing plain lettering beneath glass felt harder than speaking at the ceremony months earlier.
"My father would've hated having to explain himself," Daniel said.
"Sam would've hated being on a wall. He'd have said somebody still needed bandages."
Rosa came alongside them. She read the words slowly, checking them against the life she had known. Then she touched a fingertip to the outside of the glass beneath Samuel's name.

"This is enough for today," she said.
For the first time, Claire believed an ending could be enough for one day without pretending it was the end of every question.
