Chapter 14 - The Trial

Denise testified against David in March.

The courtroom was packed—journalists, curious locals, and families from the district who wanted to see justice done. I sat in the back, watching as Denise took the stand and answered question after question about the scheme she had helped create.

She didn't make excuses. She didn't try to minimize her role. She told the truth, even when it made her look bad.

When the prosecutor asked why she had participated in the fraud, Denise paused.

"I was afraid," she said. "Afraid of losing everything. Afraid of being ordinary. Afraid of being seen for who I really was."

"And who are you?"

"I don't know yet. But I'm trying to figure it out."

The trial lasted three weeks. David was found guilty on eleven counts of fraud and sentenced to five years in federal prison.

Denise was given a lesser sentence—eighteen months of house arrest and three years of probation—for her cooperation with the investigation.

I visited her in her apartment the week after the trial.

She looked tired, but there was something different about her. A softness that hadn't been there before.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

"I wanted to make sure you were okay."

"I'm not okay. But I'm surviving." She paused. "I've been thinking about what you said. About building something new."

"What have you decided?"

"I want to go back to school. Get a degree. Maybe become a counselor." She laughed, the sound hollow but genuine. "I spent years telling people what to do. Maybe I can spend the rest of my life actually helping them."

"That sounds like a good plan."

"It feels strange to have a plan. I've never had one before. I just... went where David told me, did what the PTA expected, followed the script. Now I have to write my own."

"You can do it."

She looked at me with something like wonder. "How do you know?"

"Because I did it. After years of feeling like a failure, I figured out who I wanted to be. You can too."
