Chapter 17 - The Future

The school year ended with a picnic.
Families gathered on the playground, sharing food and stories. Children ran through sprinklers and climbed on the jungle gym. The sound of laughter filled the air.
I sat on a bench, watching it all. Rachel was talking to Sandra. Eli was playing tag with a group of kids who had once ignored him. Maya was organizing a game of her own, bossing everyone around with good-natured enthusiasm.
Mrs. Delgado sat down beside me.
"You look happy," she said.
"I am."
"It suits you."
We sat in comfortable silence for a while, watching the children play.
"You know," Mrs. Delgado said eventually, "I've been teaching for thirty years. I've seen a lot of principals, a lot of parents, a lot of fights. But I've never seen anything quite like what you've done."
"I didn't do it alone."
"No. But you started it." She looked at me with those sharp, knowing eyes. "That's the thing about leadership, Jake. It's not about being the smartest or the strongest. It's about being willing to go first. To stand up when everyone else is sitting down."

"I just did what I thought was right."
"I know. That's what makes it special."
