Chapter 10 - A Neighbor Changes Her Mind

When I got home, Troy Ellison was standing at the edge of my driveway with a tape measure.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

He held up both palms. "Checking how far your trailer hitch sticks toward the sidewalk."

"I don't have a trailer."

"The hitch is right there."

Troy lived across the street and had spent the last two months campaigning to make Canyon Vista look "more upscale." He wasn't wealthy. He worked in home insurance and had stretched to buy the house. He wanted the neighborhood to justify his mortgage. I understood that feeling better than he knew.

"Is this your idea or Mercer's?" I asked.

"He says there's an equipment issue. I don't want trucks operating in the driveway."

"Neither do I. No customer car has ever been washed here."

Troy peered into the bed at the empty tank. "That's not what the rumor says."

"Then ask me, not the rumor."

For a moment, he looked embarrassed. Then he said his home insurance renewal had increased and he worried what buyers would think if houses on the street started to look like job sites. I didn't have a magic answer for that. The town around us had construction workers, nurses, janitors, mechanics, and delivery drivers. Someone had to take care of the houses he wanted to appreciate.

"Come with me," I said.

I showed him the tank, the sealed supplies, and the dated shop work orders on my phone. He examined the empty hose connection. The neighbor who had called me careless now looked at his own assumptions.

"You don't wash cars here?"

"No. But I shouldn't have to prove I'm not running a car wash because I own a bucket."

Troy glanced at the dust on his own black sedan. "Mine's filthy too."

"Everyone's is."

He hesitated, then told me Mercer had asked him to file a complaint. He had drafted one but hadn't sent it.

"Why didn't you?" I asked.

"I saw your daughter leaving for school in the truck." He looked down at the tape measure. "You looked like any father taking his kid somewhere. I figured I should ask first."

Troy left without taking a single measurement. An hour later he emailed me a forwarded message from Mercer.
