Chapter 7 - The Gold Logo

"You saw it too," Leah said once we were outside the clubhouse.
"The dealership logo? Yeah."
"That doesn't mean something illegal happened."
"I didn't say it did."
"Your face did."
We sat in the truck with the windows open because the cab was too hot to touch. Leah read the inspection printout while I counted the dates for a second time. The first three photographs shared almost identical angles, shadows, and dust patterns. The fourth was taken two weeks later. Everything between was an automatic carry-forward entry.
"Mercer asked Laurel to start a daily count," I said. "That's what I think."
"Then ask him what authorizes it. Don't build a conspiracy out of a folder title."
On the drive home we passed a yellow banner fastened to the Canyon Vista gate: SUMMER AUTO-CARE DISCOUNT FOR RESIDENTS. Beneath it was the gold Mercer Motor Group logo. I'd seen the banner before without thinking about it. People advertised everything from garage doors to pool service in neighborhood newsletters.
That evening I asked Eileen what she knew. "He proposed the partnership at a social committee meeting," she said. "Free coffee at the dealership, discounted detailing for residents, that sort of thing."
"Was the HOA paying him?"
"I have no idea. I said the association shouldn't promote one owner's business. Charles said it was a courtesy."
I asked her not to guess about money either. This time I meant it.
At work, Dani assigned me an old green pickup with dull clear coat. Someone had used a cheap abrasive pad on the hood. I spent nearly three hours restoring the finish without taking off more material than necessary. The owner was a landscaper who had kept the truck for seventeen years.
"Looks like he can make another seventeen," Owen said when we rolled it into the light.
"That's the idea."
Dani appeared with the afternoon delivery list. My name was back on the schedule for two shifts, not five. She hadn't promised more. "The dealership's customer-service director wants to meet you tomorrow," she said.

"Am I getting fired?"
"I don't know. But somebody at the store has figured out which blue truck belongs to you."
