Chapter 10 - When the Door Closes

Leah stared at Naomi's signature until she understood how many people had been able to walk away from Aaron's story. Graham had profited from the myth. Naomi had accepted a narrow answer. Leah had protected her career. No one act explained the entire failure, which made it harder to hate a single person enough to feel finished.

Graham's attorney sent a demand letter to Leah's civilian email. It alleged she had spread damaging statements about the commander and sought preservation of her communications. The lawyer threatened possible civil action but did not present a court order.

"Don't respond in anger," Rebecca Shaw advised when Leah forwarded the letter with Tessa's permission. "Obtain your own legal advice about what applies to you. And don't confuse a demand with a verdict."

Leah took her advice. She stopped posting about the case. She saved messages and receipts without altering them. But silence felt like leaving Graham the whole stage.

At a Blue Lantern board meeting, Monica moved for an independent investigation into referrals and payments. The motion passed narrowly. Graham resigned as the charity's executive director the following day, saying he needed to defend his reputation. His private company continued operating under its own name.

The local paper ran a triumphant headline. Charity Leader Ousted After Navy Rescue Scandal.

Monica called Leah. "They make it sound like everything is fixed. It isn't. We still need to find people who paid the LLC. We still have a pantry to run."

"Is Graham cooperating?"

"His lawyer asked for records. We gave them to the independent reviewer through counsel."

That night Caleb's wife, Jenna, approached Leah outside a grocery store. Her cheeks were flushed with exhaustion.

"Caleb isn't sleeping," she said. "He wants to help Aaron's mother, but every time someone calls about that photograph he's back on the raft."

"I never meant—"

"I know you didn't. You're not cruel. But sometimes people with the best intentions ask survivors to bleed all over again so the rest of us will believe them."

Leah placed her shopping bag on the sidewalk. "What can I do?"

"Stop asking him to carry the case. Let him decide when he's ready."

Leah nodded. A career had trained her to solve problems by giving orders. No order in the world could make a survivor feel safe.

Jenna glanced toward the parking lot. "And there's something else. He says the man in the famous rescue photo isn't Graham. But Graham did one thing that night nobody has mentioned. Caleb thinks it matters."
