Chapter 8 - The People in the Picture

Leah went to the boat shop to apologize, but Tessa refused to come outside. Miguel stepped into the parking lot and kept his hands in his pockets.

"She doesn't need another explanation," he said. "She needs you to leave."

"I understand."

"Do you? Somebody called here accusing her of making up the crash. A stranger asked whether she was the woman in the picture. We have a new apprentice who's scared to answer the phone."

Leah wanted to explain that the article might help other families. She knew how selfish that would sound, and for once she kept quiet.

Captain Ward handed Leah a counseling memorandum. It did not declare her guilty of fraud or forbid her from filing a complaint. It stated that sharing material connected to a past service incident without adequate regard for privacy had undermined her judgment as an officer. She was removed from an upcoming public outreach event pending review.

"I can't order a civilian reporter to forget what she saw," Ward said. "I can insist that you learn from this."

"I thought I could control what the picture revealed."

"That's why you don't improvise privacy decisions with somebody else's history."

At home Samuel had dinner waiting. Leah sat with him while it cooled.

"I hurt her," she said.

"Then your apology belongs to her, not to everyone who's willing to tell you you're a good person."

"She won't speak to me."

"That's one of the consequences."

Later Leah wrote Tessa a letter by hand. She did not ask for forgiveness or another meeting. She described what she had sent, acknowledged that her cropping had failed, and promised she would not distribute the photograph again. She enclosed the original notebook in a sealed envelope addressed to Margaret Bell, as Tessa had requested.

Margaret called two days later. "Aaron's notebook arrived. Thank you."

"I'm sorry this made things harder for you."

"It did," Margaret said. "But Aaron's handwriting reminds me he was a young man who worried about whether his boots would dry. I'm keeping the notebook. And I'm not letting Graham use his face anymore."

Then she added something Leah didn't expect.

"I spoke to Tessa. You should know she's considering giving a statement to someone who isn't you."
