Chapter 11 - THE FATHER

Thomas Carter was awake when Alex entered the hospital room.

He saw the contract.

Then looked away.

“Mom told you.”

Alex shut the door.

“You built Lantern.”

“No.”

“Your name is on it.”

“I designed part of the architecture.”

“For Voss.”

“For a bank.”

“Which bank?”

“There wasn't one.”

Alex laughed bitterly.

“So everyone knew except me.”

“No.”

“You knew.”

“I knew enough.”

His father sat up painfully.

“Alex, listen.”

“No. You listen.”

Years of admiration collapsed inside him.

“You watched me take his money.”

“I told you not to.”

“You said Voss was arrogant. You didn't say he was a criminal.”

“If I'd told you, what would you have done?”

Alex stopped.

His father answered for him.

“Exactly what you're doing now.”

“That would have been my decision.”

“Yes.”

Thomas looked older than Alex had ever seen him.

“And I was afraid.”

The admission changed the room.

Not excuses.

Fear.

His father continued.

“I helped design a transaction-routing model. It was supposed to reduce market friction.”

“What did they use it for?”

“Moving money without drawing attention.”

“You knew?”

“Eventually.”

“And when you tried to leave?”

Thomas touched his chest.

“They didn't poison me, if that's what you're thinking.”

“Then what?”

“They sent photographs.”

Alex froze.

“Of who?”

“You.”

Thomas's voice broke.

“You were seventeen.”

Alex sat down.

“They threatened me?”

“They didn't have to say it.”

Thomas looked toward the window.

“So I stayed quiet.”

Alex couldn't speak.

His father continued.

“Then you met Voss.”

“You knew he arranged it?”

“Not until later.”

“And you still didn't tell me.”

“I thought if you became successful enough, he would need you alive.”

Alex stared.

That was the terrible logic of frightened parents.

Wrong.

But understandable.

Thomas pointed toward the contract.

“There's something Voss doesn't know.”

“What?”

“I never finished Lantern.”

Alex frowned.

“He said it worked.”

“The movement system worked.”

“Then what didn't?”

“The accountability layer.”

Alex leaned forward.

“What does that mean?”

“Every transaction leaves a hidden signature.”

Alex's heart accelerated.

“Where?”

“In the algorithm.”

“Lattice?”

Thomas nodded.

“You didn't invent that part.”

Alex stared at him.

“You did.”

“Yes.”

Thomas smiled weakly.

“And when you rebuilt my architecture without knowing it
”

Alex understood.

“
I inherited the signature detector.”

“Exactly.”

Lattice hadn't accidentally discovered Meridian.

It had been designed, generations earlier, to be capable of exposing it.

Thomas reached toward him.

“Daniel thinks he spent six years turning you into his weapon.”

Alex looked at his father.

“He doesn't know you built the safety.”

“No.”

Thomas shook his head.

“I built the lock.”

He smiled.

May you like

“You built the key.”
