Chapter 12 - THE RETURN

Alex stopped hiding.

That surprised everyone.

At nine the next morning, he walked through the front entrance of Meridian Tower.

Reporters followed.

Victor's lawyers shouted.

Security approached.

Alex held up his hands.

“I'm here for my company.”

A guard laughed.

“You sold it.”

Alex smiled.

“Exactly.”

Maya arrived behind him.

Then Noah.

Then Elise.

Alive.

Bruised.

But smiling.

Victor appeared from the elevator.

“You're trespassing.”

Alex looked toward the cameras.

“No.”

He removed a document.

“You suspended payment.”

Victor frowned.

“Your acquisition agreement contains a clawback provision.”

Elise stepped forward.

“Section fourteen.”

Victor looked at her.

She smiled.

“If Meridian materially misrepresented the purpose of the transaction, ownership reverts pending arbitration.”

“That provision isn't enforceable.”

“Maybe.”

Alex shrugged.

“But you taught me something.”

“What?”

“Court takes time.”

He held up his phone.

“Public opinion doesn't.”

Behind him, Maya connected a laptop to the lobby display system.

Every television changed.

Daniel Voss.

The coffee-shop recording.

The kid built exactly what we need.

Employees stopped walking.

Victor's face drained.

Then another recording.

Project Lantern.

Thomas's documents.

Transaction signatures.

Alex spoke loudly.

“Six years ago, Meridian funded my company because it believed it could control what we built.”

News cameras crowded closer.

“It was wrong.”

Victor stepped toward him.

“Turn this off.”

“No.”

“You are exposing confidential systems.”

Alex looked at him.

“Then sue me.”

“You'll lose everything.”

Alex smiled.

“I already did.”

Police entered.

Not Meridian security.

Police.

Then federal agents.

Again.

But this time they weren't arriving with accusations.

They had transaction signatures.

Original contracts.

The fourth drive.

Thomas's architecture.

A chain of evidence.

Victor looked toward the elevators.

No escape.

An agent approached.

“Victor Hale?”

Victor didn't move.

Alex watched handcuffs close around his wrists.

Small payoff.

Real payoff.

The man who had sent someone into Alex's apartment was finally arrested.

Then Alex searched the lobby.

Voss wasn't there.

Of course he wasn't.

Alex's phone vibrated.

One text.

DANIEL VOSS:

YOU FOUND THE LOCK.

Another appeared.

NOW FIND ME.

Alex stared.

A photograph loaded.

Daniel Voss standing beside a private aircraft.

Timestamp:

Three minutes earlier.

Maya looked over Alex's shoulder.

“He's leaving.”

Alex nodded.

Noah said:

“Where?”

Alex zoomed in on the aircraft registration.

Then froze.

The plane didn't belong to Voss.

It belonged to a foundation.

One Alex knew very well.

Because Voss had donated millions to it.

The foundation controlled hospitals.

Scholarships.

Universities.

Political programs.

And one private research campus outside Washington.

Alex looked at Maya.

“He's not running.”

“What is he doing?”

Alex put the phone away.

May you like

“He's going to turn Lantern on.”
