Chapter 11 - The Server Room

Julian claimed his phone had been cloned.
Priya said that was possible.
Then she said something worse.
"The instruction used biometric confirmation."
Julian stared at her.
"You're saying someone used my face?"
"I'm saying the phone recorded a successful face authentication."
"That could happen while I was asleep."
I looked at him.
"Was Camilla in our house that night too?"
His face hardened.
"Stop."
"You keep asking me to stop exactly where the facts become uncomfortable."
The data-center administrator, Michael Torres, agreed to meet us under counsel supervision.
He looked terrified.
"Mr. Mercer called me."
Julian went still.
"Called?"
Michael nodded.
"Not just a message."
"When?"
"6:18 yesterday morning."
Julian's face drained.
I knew where he had been at 6:18.
In our house.
I had already left for the hotel.
"What did I say?" he asked.
Michael looked at Leah.
She nodded for him to answer.
"You said the board was going to overreact to old files. You told me to honor the deletion request and not take calls from Reed until noon."
Julian stepped back.
"I never called you."
Michael pulled out his phone.
"I recorded it."
Julian's voice filled the room.
No mistaking it.
The phrases were his.
The irritation was his.
But Priya listened twice.
Then she frowned.
"This may be synthetic."
Everyone turned.
"What?"
"There are cadence artifacts. Very subtle."
Camilla worked in communications.
She had access to hundreds of hours of Julian speaking at conferences, interviews, earnings calls, and internal videos.
She had his smart-home audio.
She had his phone long enough to route commands.
Suddenly Julian looked less like the mastermind and more like a useful idiot with executive access.
That did not make him innocent.
But it changed the question.
Priya imaged the data-center logs.
The wipe order originated from a remote administrative credential assigned to Camilla's communications operations group.
She had used Julian's approval identity as cover.
Grant leaned back.
"She built a whole crime around his ego."
Julian looked at him.
"You enjoying this?"
Grant shrugged.
"Less than your wife is entitled to."
I ignored both of them.
The restored server contained deleted emails.
One thread between Julian and Camilla mattered most.
Camilla: Meridian needs one more payment before quarter close.
Julian: Kessler says cash is tight.
Camilla: Then make him understand what happens if the expansion losses hit before refinancing.
Julian: Fine. But after the board vote, I'm done signing blind.
Camilla: After the board vote, you'll be president.
Julian: And Nora?
Camilla: She'll still think you need her permission to matter.
Julian: Don't talk about my wife.
Camilla: You do that enough for both of us.
I stared at the screen.
Julian had known he was signing blind.
That phrase mattered.
He had not known every fraud.
He had chosen not to know.
Then another email.
Julian: If this blows back on me, you fix it.
Camilla: I always do.
He closed his eyes.
"I was an idiot."
I looked at him.
"Yes."
"I didn't steal the money."
"You approved it."
"I believed her."
"You believed whatever made you feel important."
That hurt him.
Good.
Priya opened one final deleted audio file.
Camilla's voice.
"If he gets nervous, remind him Nora already thinks he's smaller than she is. He'll sign anything to prove he isn't."
A man's voice answered.
Not Julian.
Evan Price.
"And if Nora still closes the deal?"
Camilla laughed.
"Then I ruin her marriage in public, freeze her votes in court, and let everyone blame the jealous husband."
Julian stared at the speakers.
For the first time, he heard exactly what Camilla thought of him.
Not partner.
Not lover.
May you like
Weapon.
