Chapter 12 - The Offer

Julian asked me to meet him alone that night.

I almost refused.

Then he said he had something Camilla did not know he kept.

We met in a private room at a restaurant neither of us liked enough to have memories in.

He looked exhausted.

No tie.

No executive armor.

Just a man who had watched his promotion, affair, lawsuit, and self-image collapse in forty-eight hours.

He placed a small drive on the table.

"What's that?"

"My insurance policy."

I almost laughed.

"You had one?"

"I started keeping copies when Camilla began asking me to sign approvals outside normal channels."

"So you knew something was wrong."

"I knew she was hiding things."

"And you kept signing."

His jaw tightened.

"I wanted the presidency."

At least he finally said it plainly.

"What's on the drive?"

"Messages she deleted from my phone. Contracts. One recording with Evan."

"Why not give it to Leah?"

"Because I want terms."

There it was.

Julian could confess only if confession remained a negotiation.

"What terms?"

"You stop the board from referring my conduct to prosecutors."

"No."

His eyes narrowed.

"You didn't even think."

"I don't own the prosecutors."

"You control the board."

"I control fifty-eight percent of the shares. That is not a personal pardon machine."

He leaned forward.

"Then divorce settlement."

"My attorney can discuss that."

"Twenty million."

I stared at him.

"For what?"

"My silence."

I almost admired the stupidity.

"You are offering not to blackmail me if I pay you twenty million dollars?"

"I am offering to keep private conversations private."

"The ones Camilla already stole?"

His face hardened.

"There are others."

He took out his phone and played a clip.

My voice.

Months earlier.

"If Malcolm ever loses control, I could buy Aurelia cheap and fix it in a year."

I remembered the conversation.

I had been angry after Julian canceled our anniversary dinner for a strategy retreat with Camilla.

I had said it sarcastically.

In context, harmless.

Out of context, ugly.

Julian stopped the clip.

"Imagine that on television."

Something inside me settled.

Not anger.

Clarity.

"Send it."

He blinked.

"What?"

"Send every recording."

"Nora-"

"I spent years protecting your ego by shrinking my life around it. I am not buying my own words back from you."

He stared.

I stood.

"If the full recordings hurt me, I will survive it. If edited recordings hurt me, I will release the originals."

"And the drive?"

"Give it to Leah."

"Why would I?"

"Because you need to decide whether you want your next identity to be 'man who helped expose the fraud' or 'man who tried to sell evidence after signing the fraud.'"

I picked up my bag.

Julian's voice softened.

"Did you ever love me?"

I stopped.

Of all the things he could ask, that was the one that still had teeth.

"Yes."

He looked down.

"Then how can you do this?"

I turned.

"Because loving you was not a contract to abandon myself."

I left.

At 11:36 p.m., Leah called.

Julian had delivered the drive.

At 11:48, Camilla sent every major business reporter the edited recording he had threatened me with.

At midnight, #HostileWife was trending.

And by 12:15, one of Northstar's largest lenders demanded an emergency call before opening bell.
