Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH

I remembered.

It came back in pieces. Fragments. Like shards of glass embedded in my brain.

Three years ago. A different job. A different building. A call about a disturbance in 7B.

I'd found her. Elena. Beaten. Broken. Barely breathing.

She'd whispered something to me. Something I'd tried to forget.

"He took my daughter. He took Sophia. Please... find her."

I'd promised. I'd sworn I would.

But I didn't.

The case went cold. The leads dried up. And I moved on. Took a new job. A quieter job. Tried to bury the guilt under coffee and security monitors and the slow decay of my own body.

May you like

I never found Sophia.

I never even tried.
