Chapter 11 - Maisie’s Mirror

At five, Maisie’s hair had grown. Not fully. Enough. She still disliked salons. Declan stopped asking. One morning she stood before the bathroom mirror and touched the shorter side. “Daddy?” “Yes?” “Hair grow.” “It does.” “Ms. Kendrick make ugly.”
Declan crouched. “She made it uneven.” Maisie looked at him. “Ugly?” “No.” “Kids said funny.” That hurt. Declan wanted names. Teachers. Consequences. Instead: “How did that feel?” Maisie shrugged. “Sad.” “What do you want me to do?” She thought. “Nothing.” Hardest answer. Declan nodded. “Okay.” His daughter’s pain did not automatically become his project.
