Chapter 9 - The First Police Interview
Police interviewed Ms. Kendrick with counsel. She admitted cutting Maisie’s hair. Her defense: “It began as an attempt to remove glue.” Investigators asked: “Why continue after she cried?” “She was moving.” “Why place scissors in her hand?” Kendrick paused. “I panicked.” “Why tell her to say she cut it?” Another pause. “I knew her father would overreact.”
There. Not: I wanted to protect the child. Protect herself. Investigators asked about the backdated reports. She claimed she had been catching up on documentation. “All five the day before?” “Yes.” “Why did the reports describe behavior contradicted by earlier records?” “Different staff see different things.”

Then the separation recommendation. Kendrick’s lawyer requested a break. The finance language made her explanation weaker. Finally: “I believed Declan’s board behavior had become hostile.” “So you wrote that his daughter’s supposed behavior explained his financial objections?” “I saw the issues as connected.” They were connected. Just not the way she meant.
