Chapter 10 - My Mother Left a Recording

Marisol Ortega lived behind a blue gate in a quiet neighborhood in Cuernavaca.
She opened the door before we knocked.
“I wondered how long it would take,” she said.
She was sixty now, maybe older. Gray streaks in her dark hair. Sharp eyes.
When she looked at me, her face broke.
“Valeria.”
I had prepared questions during the drive.
Every one of them disappeared.
“Why did you leave?” I asked.
Marisol looked past me at my father.
“Because your mother told me to.”
Dad’s face went still.
“She told you?”
“The night before the crash.”
My knees weakened.
We sat in her living room.
Marisol brought out a small metal box.
Inside were two cassette tapes, a digital recorder, copies of old contracts, and a sealed envelope with my name on it.
My hands shook.
“Why didn’t you send this to me?”
“Because Lucía said to wait until the old structure became active again.”
“How would you know?”
Marisol nodded at the payment ledger Alejandro had brought.
“When the payments restarted.”
I looked at my father. “You knew about these?”
“No.”
Marisol believed him.
That frightened me.
She played the digital recording.
My mother’s voice filled the room.
Clear.
Alive.
I had not heard it in twelve years.
I pressed my fist against my mouth.
Lucía was arguing with Federico.
“You pledged the parcels twice.”
Federico answered, “Temporarily.”
“There is no temporary fraud.”
Then Ignacio’s voice.
“Lucía, lower your voice.”
“No.”
My mother again.
“You are both using Lirio Azul to hide losses, and someone altered Arturo’s approval.”
A chair scraped.
Then my father’s voice entered the room.
“End it.”
The recording stopped.
I stared at him.
Arturo looked like someone had hit him.
“That is not the whole conversation.”
Marisol nodded. “Correct.”
She played the next file.
Dad’s voice continued.
“End the deal. Freeze every transfer. Nobody touches Lucía’s trust until we know who forged my name.”
I closed my eyes.
The first clip, by itself, could have destroyed him.
Context changed everything.
Marisol looked at me. “That is why your mother kept originals.”
“Why did she think she was in danger?”
“Because she had discovered the forged signature was not an isolated act.”
She handed me the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Valeria,
If this reaches you, it means someone decided silence was safer than truth.
Do not hate your father for being slow to believe me. He trusts loyalty too much. That is his weakness.
Mine is believing I can fix everything before telling the people I love.
I had to stop reading.
Dad turned away.
I forced myself to continue.
The final paragraph was underlined.
If Santa Lucía ever returns, do not begin with Federico. Begin with the man who controls risk beside your father.
I looked at Ignacio’s empty chair in my memory.
Then Marisol said, “There is one more recording.”
She did not play it.
“Why not?”
“Because Lucía told me only to give it to you if Ignacio disappeared.”
My phone rang.
Mariana.
Her voice was tight.
“Valeria, Ignacio left Vanguardia twenty minutes ago. His office is empty. His home security system has been wiped.”
I looked at Marisol.
Ignacio had disappeared.
