Chapter 14 - The Brother Who Had Been Erased

Dad did not deny Gabriel existed.

He sat in silence while I placed Elena’s notebook on his desk.

Then he said, “I was nineteen when he disappeared.”

“You told me you were an only child.”

“I told everyone.”

“That does not make it better.”

“No.”

He looked at the old names.

“Gabriel was brilliant. Charming. Reckless. He could persuade people to trust him while he was still deciding whether to betray them.”

“What did he steal?”

“Client funds. Then he covered the theft with false subscriptions and forged approvals.”

“The same pattern.”

“Yes.”

“Did Mom think he came back?”

Dad looked at me. “She suspected someone had copied his methods.”

“Not him?”

“Gabriel would be in his sixties now. I have no proof he is alive.”

Mariana entered with an update from investigators.

Ignacio had begun cooperating.

Not because conscience appeared.

Because prison did.

He admitted using my father’s token after the crash.

He admitted paying Marisol to remain quiet.

He admitted directing Camila’s investigation.

He admitted working with Federico to keep De la Vega’s project alive long enough for Vanguardia financing to refinance the hidden debt.

But he denied creating the structure.

“He says he inherited it,” Mariana said.

“From whom?”

“He used a name.”

I already knew.

“Gabriel.”

She nodded.

Dad stood slowly.

Ignacio claimed a man using the name Gabriel Arturo had approached him thirteen years ago with documents proving old Vanguardia approvals had been falsified.

The threat was simple.

Help maintain the hidden structure, or watch the company and Arturo’s reputation collapse under decades-old fraud.

Ignacio chose secrecy.

Then profit.

Then control.

Cowardice had evolved into a business model.

“What about Federico?” I asked.

“He knew the structure was dirty. He did not know who created the oldest layer.”

“And Beatriz?”

“Knew enough to protect the company. Not enough to understand the origin.”

Alejandro arrived later with his attorney.

He had agreed to provide evidence against his father.

He looked exhausted.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me,” he said.

“Good.”

“I’m not asking you to take me back.”

“Better.”

He almost smiled.

Then his face became serious.

“My father wants to speak to you.”

“Federico?”

“He turned himself in this morning.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“Because Ignacio named him.”

“That sounds practical, not noble.”

“It is.”

He handed me a sealed envelope.

“Dad said this was delivered to him yesterday. He thinks it is from Gabriel.”

Inside was one page.

No signature.

Only a sentence.

VALERIA SHOULD NOT BLOCK THE FINANCING.

Below it was a list of twelve subcontractors on the De la Vega development.

Together they employed more than three thousand people.

At the bottom was another sentence.

IF THE PROJECT FALLS, THEY FALL FIRST.

For the first time, the threat was not aimed at my family.

It was aimed at everyone who had nothing to do with us.
