Chapter 14 - The Fortune Was Never Carter Money

Reed claimed Carter Maritime had been built with money he secretly supplied decades earlier.

William Carter had the family name.

Reed had the capital.

Evelyn had the connection between them.

“Thomas was supposed to inherit my hidden stake,” Reed said. “Then he decided I was a criminal.”

“You forged death certificates.”

“I protected assets.”

“You tried to kill my father.”

“I tried to prevent him from destroying everything.”

Julian’s gun stayed trained on him.

“You planted the bomb.”

Reed looked almost offended.

“No.”

“Your men put it there.”

“They placed a device. It was never supposed to detonate.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“It was leverage. Thomas was supposed to surrender the ledgers when he found it.”

“Then why did it explode?”

Reed looked toward Julian.

“Ask him.”

Julian’s face tightened.

“I didn’t arm it.”

“No,” Reed said. “But you replaced the crate seal.”

“To help Thomas.”

“You gave Sarah access to the control frequency.”

Julian went silent.

I understood.

No single person had planned my father’s death exactly as it happened.

Reed planted the bomb as a threat.

Thomas turned the threat into a plan to fake my death.

Julian unknowingly helped move it.

Sarah detonated it early to save me.

And Thomas chose not to escape.

Every lie had stacked on another until a man died.

But one question remained.

“Who sent Reed’s men after Mara?”

Reed smiled.

“I did.”

Julian moved the gun higher.

“Why?”

“Because Thomas put the real ledger on the child.”

I stopped breathing.

“What?”

“The cardigan,” Reed said.

I thought about the hidden seam.

The photograph.

The note.

“That’s all that was inside.”

“No.”

Reed walked closer.

“Mara removed what Thomas stitched into the hem before she ever wrapped you in it.”

“What was it?”

“The original bearer certificate for my shares.”

Julian stared at him.

“That certificate still exists?”

Reed looked pleased by his surprise.

“With it, Emily controls the hidden stake. Without it, everything stays disputed.”

I thought of Mara’s house.

Her cedar chest.

Her desk.

Twenty-three years of ordinary objects.

“Where did she hide it?”

Reed’s smile faded.

“That’s why you’re here.”

He did not know.

For the first time, I had something he needed.

Then my phone rang.

Sarah.

I answered.

Her voice was panicked.

“Emily, get out of there.”

“How do you know where I am?”

“Gabriel called me.”

“He’s alive?”

“Yes. And he finally remembered where Mara put the certificate.”

“Where?”

A crash sounded on her end.

Sarah screamed.

The line went dead.

I looked at Reed.

He was no longer smiling.

Then his phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

And I saw my mother’s face in a live video feed.

Someone had her.

Reed looked at me.

“That isn’t my team.”
