Chapter 9 - The Voice on the Tape

I wanted the recording to be fake.
That would have been easier.
Sarah handed me headphones and told me to listen again.
I did.
Evelyn’s voice.
My grandmother ordering my death.
I called her.
She answered quietly.
“Did you open the door?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Is Sarah there?”
“Yes.”
Sarah watched me from across the room.
I pressed play through the phone.
Evelyn listened to herself say, She goes down with her father.
When it ended, I asked, “Still protecting me?”
Evelyn did not answer.
“Say something.”
“That recording is real.”
Sarah stiffened.
My throat tightened.
“Then you tried to kill me.”
“No.”
“I just heard you.”
“You heard what Reed wanted Thomas to hear.”
I laughed.
“Convenient.”
“Ask Sarah where she got the recorder.”
I looked at my mother.
Sarah said nothing.
“Where?”
“Gabriel sent it to me.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
My skin prickled.
Gabriel had disappeared after men broke into his shop.
Evelyn said, “Reed has used edited recordings before.”
Sarah snapped, “You always blame Reed.”
“Because you never understood what he built.”
“What did he build?” I asked.
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“A system for making legal facts out of lies.”
Fake medical records.
Forged death certificates.
Altered competency evaluations.
Power of attorney.
Guardianship.
For decades, Reed had used medical authority to change who legally controlled Carter assets whenever someone became inconvenient.
My father after the car crash.
My mother after the staged death.
Me after the yacht.
“But why?” I asked. “What did he get?”
Evelyn said, “Nothing directly.”
“Then who did?”
“The person who paid him.”
“Julian?”
“No.”
Sarah stood.
“Stop protecting him.”
“I’m not.”
“Then say the name.”
Evelyn did.
“Your grandfather.”
My father’s father, William Carter, had died thirty years ago.
Five years before I was born.
“That’s impossible.”
Evelyn’s voice became almost a whisper.
“I saw William buried too.”
“Then what are you saying?”
“I’m saying payments from his private trust continued for eleven years after his death.”
Sarah’s face changed.
She knew something.
I saw it.
“What?”
“Emily…”
“What?”
Sarah sat down slowly.
“When Thomas found those same payments, he told me one thing.”
She looked terrified.
“He said his father might not have been the man who died in that grave.”
