Chapter 8 - The Medical File
Eleanor sat in her idling Mercedes SUV, parked outside a private clinic on Park Avenue.
She held a manila envelope. It had cost her the last remaining Rolex in her safety deposit box, traded to Richard's private physician twenty minutes ago. Blackmail was expensive, but effective.
She opened the clasp and slid the medical file out.
Patient: Richard Vance. Date: October 14, three years ago. Procedure: Bilateral Vasectomy.
Eleanor read the surgical notes twice. The sterile, clinical language confirmed it. Richard was completely sterile. He had been for years. He had done it in secret, likely to avoid the pressure of producing an heir.
Which meant the twins in Chloe's stomach were not his.
Eleanor thought back to the sonogram on the coffee table. She pulled a high-resolution photo of it from her phone. She zoomed in on the patient intake data printed on the top margin.
Blood Type: AB Negative.
Chloe was O Positive. Richard was A Positive.
Arthur was AB Negative.

A cold sweat broke out on the back of Eleanor’s neck. The metallic smell of dry-cleaning fluid and gin seemed to fill the car.
Chloe wasn't sleeping with Richard to get to the company. She was sleeping with Arthur. Richard was just the convenient, believable cover story to avoid a scandal that would ruin the Patriarch.
