Chapter 9 - The Boardroom

The mahogany table in the executive boardroom gleamed under the recessed lighting.

The twelve members of the board sat in silence. Arthur sat at the head of the table, his face a mask of stone. Richard sat to his right, looking haggard, chewing on a chewed-up unlit cigar.

"The motion on the table," Arthur announced, his gravelly voice echoing, "is the immediate removal of Eleanor Vance from her position as Chief Strategy Officer, citing erratic behavior and breach of fiduciary duty."

"I second the motion," Richard mumbled, not looking at the door.

The heavy glass doors swung open.

Eleanor walked in. She wore a tailored white Tom Ford suit. She didn't look broken. She looked like an executioner.

"You don't have the floor, Eleanor," Arthur barked. "Security!"

"Security works for the highest bidder, Arthur," Eleanor said calmly, dropping a thick stack of folders onto the center of the table. "I suggest everyone open their packets before they vote on my removal."

The board members hesitated, then reached for the files.

Richard frowned, pulling his copy toward him. He opened the cover.

It was the medical file.

"What is this?" Richard asked, his voice shaking slightly.

"That is a surgical report confirming you've been shooting blanks for three years, Richard," Eleanor said to the room. "Which makes the twins your mistress is carrying a medical miracle."
